As my eldest child prepares to start kindergarten in just a few weeks, I find myself filled with a mix of excitement and anxiety. He’ll be boarding a big yellow bus packed with kids, many of whom are older, all while facing new expectations and responsibilities. Like any mom, I’m thrilled to finally have some time to tackle those never-ending tasks—like that fridge cleanout (or maybe just taking a nap). But as I countdown to that milestone first day, a slew of worries keeps creeping into my mind. While many parents might fret about their little ones crying when separated, I have my own unique set of fears. My 5-year-old is a spirited little guy with strong opinions, and while I doubt he’ll shed a tear, I might just shed a few over these 25 concerns.
- Will my child try eating glue?
- What if another kid bullies him for his lunch?
- Will he throw a tantrum when he realizes cartoons aren’t an option after lunch?
- What if he accidentally drops some inappropriate language?
- He takes ages to use the bathroom; will he hold up the line discussing dinosaurs?
- What if he argues with another kid about whether eagles are tougher than lions?
- He has no sense of modesty and loves to be in the buff. Yikes.
- He enjoys peeing outside. What happens at school?
- Will he correct the teacher like he does me with, “Excuse me, that’s not right!”?
- In a distracted moment, will he wipe his nose on the teacher’s shirt?
- Will he share that his dad’s toots are the stinkiest?
- Is he going to devour just the dessert and then come home with a note about healthier snacks?
- What if he shouts, “This is dumb,” when the teacher starts a lesson he doesn’t like?
- Will gym class turn into a show where he screams, “Hey! Look at me!”?
- Seriously, his bathroom visits take forever. WHAT WILL HAPPEN?
- What if he forgets which stop to get off the bus?
- Will he embarrass me by saying, “My mom giggles so hard she sometimes pees”?
- Is he going to be the only one who doesn’t make a new buddy?
- Will he come home declaring he has 10 new girlfriends?
- Will he show off his new superhero underwear during Show And Tell? He did it for the mailman.
- Is he going to interrupt lessons to demonstrate his ninja skills?
- What if he starts a kindergarten version of a fight club during recess?
- Am I going to receive a call from the principal?
- Will he get creative with scissors and give another kid an impromptu haircut?
- Will he be thrilled or annoyed to find out school is a daily gig?
I have a sneaking suspicion that at least a third of these scenarios will unfold, so I’m bracing myself for the chaos. Perhaps I can sweeten the deal with some chocolate and a little wine for the teacher if he turns out to be as rambunctious there as he is at home. For now, I’m hanging on tight to these last days of summer.
