The Misconception About Shedding Baby Weight

I recently bumped into a friend, Lisa, who had just welcomed a new baby into her family. She looked stunning, with no signs of the pregnancy weight in sight. Naturally, I couldn’t help but ask, “What’s your secret?”

“Oh, you know,” she said nonchalantly. “Chasing after my toddler and the baby has definitely helped. Plus, I keep forgetting to eat!”

That wasn’t quite the answer I was expecting.

It seems like every time I turn on the TV, I see celebrities sharing similar stories, and it drives me up the wall. I have three kids myself, yet I can’t say I’ve ever been in a constant sprint after them. Sure, I might rush over if I hear a loud crash, but it’s not frequent enough to break a sweat. While I’m always with my kids, my pace is more of a leisurely stroll. Let’s be real—gently pushing a child on the swing is not a cardio workout.

And how can someone forget to eat? Seriously? The only time I’ve come close to skipping meals was during those long office hours in a cubicle. But with kids, it’s a different story. They’re always asking for snacks, meals, and treats. Not to mention that their plates need to be “cleaned” constantly. As a parent, food is everywhere—how can it possibly slip your mind?

If you’ve managed to bounce back to your pre-baby body and I ask how you did it, I’d appreciate honest responses like:

  • “I’m starving and miserable, but I really wanted to fit into these jeans again.”
  • “Breastfeeding—best diet ever.”
  • “I work hard at the gym, all the time.”
  • “It’s in my genes. Just look at my mom.”
  • “Honestly, I have no clue how it came off so quickly.”
  • Or even that dreaded, “I’m eating less and moving more.”

I can understand those responses, even if I can’t relate to them.

But please, spare me the “I’m always running around and forgetting to eat” nonsense. I’ve been there and I know better.

In summary, the idea that losing baby weight is as simple as running after your kids or forgetting to eat is a myth. Realistically, it often involves a lot more effort and personal choices.
