As a mom in my 30s, I must admit that I’m not exactly the go-to authority on trendy slang. I’ve even found myself Googling certain phrases just to figure out why everyone seems to be saying goodbye to a woman named Felicia. It’s clear that relying on Urban Dictionary to stay in touch with the latest lingo isn’t quite the vibe, and I certainly shouldn’t be throwing around these words like I own them.
However, I do hold a bit of expertise in the realm of parenting lingo. I can fluently converse in toddler-ese and can easily distinguish between a baby’s “Ma! Ma!” and “Ma? Ma?” Since moms have contributed so much to the world, I think we deserve a say in how slang evolves.
1. On Fleek
Real version: When your outfit or look is flawless, e.g., “This outfit is on fleek.”
Mom version: A great find at the flea market, e.g., “I got this outfit on fleek for just $10!”
Dress and pinwheel both on fleek!
2. Netflix and Chill
Real version: A euphemism for casual sex (that may or may not involve actual Netflix).
Mom version: Watching House of Cards and drifting off to sleep at 8:30 p.m.
Settling in for a night with Frank Underwood.
3. Bae
Real version: An endearing acronym meaning “before anything else.”
Mom version: A fun term for bagel, e.g., “I could really use a bae and a schmear right now.”
4. Squad
Real version: Your close group of friends.
Mom version: The kids, e.g., “Sorry we’re late. It took forever to get the squad ready.”
Bonus: Squad Goals: Getting the kids to accomplish something, e.g., “Brothers are not fighting! #SquadGoals!”
5. Stay Woke
Real version: Being aware of important social issues.
Mom version: Trying to survive on little sleep, e.g., “The baby kept me up all night. I’m just trying to stay woke.”
Stay woke like a boss!
By the time you read this, some of these terms may already be out of style. I look forward to giving the next batch a mom makeover. Until then, goodbye Felicia! (Just to clarify, that’s a friendly farewell to anyone named Felicia. I hope you have a lovely day!)

In summary, moms have a unique perspective on slang that’s worth embracing. Whether it’s a “squad” of kids or a “bae” bagel, let’s redefine the terms and make them our own.
