Thou Shalt Drink the Wine (And Other Commandments)

This piece isn’t meant to be disrespectful. Moses had his commandments, and I’m offering my own set of guidelines to enhance life for you, your loved ones, and everyone around you. Here are my ten commandments for a more fulfilling existence.

1. Thou Shalt Drink the Wine (or Not)

If wine is your go-to, enjoy a glass (or two) responsibly. Just don’t get plastered around the kids; that’s a no-go. If wine isn’t your thing, treat yourself to something you adore every now and then—maybe it’s cheesecake or a decadent dessert. Ultimately, it’s crucial to not worry about what anyone else is indulging in—unless they’re out of control. In that case, be a good friend and call them an Uber.

2. Thou Shalt Clean the House… Occasionally

Cleaning is necessary, especially when guests are coming or if the house has become a disaster zone. But sometimes, it’s far more important to take your kids on an adventure than to mop the floors. Prioritize experiences over chores when you can.

3. Thou Shalt Not Be an Asshole

If you’re a parent, being an asshole sets a poor example for your kids. You never know what someone else is going through. That slow driver in front of you? They might be grappling with something life-altering. Choose kindness; it makes life better for everyone.

4. Thou Shalt Not Give Unsolicited Advice

Every person’s journey is unique, whether it’s parenting, relationships, or personal struggles. Instead of sharing your opinions, listen. People will appreciate your support much more.

5. Thou Shalt Get Off Thy Ass and Move

Your metabolism won’t last forever, and it’s easy to get caught up in life and forget to be active. Whether it’s walking, biking, or another form of exercise, make time for movement. You’ll feel better for it—no guilt necessary.

6. Thou Shalt Not Envy Another’s Joy

When your friends are happy, celebrate with them. It can be tough, especially if you’re feeling down, but stepping into their happiness can brighten your own perspective. Being supportive during both good times and bad strengthens relationships.

7. Thou Shalt Not Cut Off Thy Nose to Spite Thy Face

Family dynamics can be challenging, but unless the situation is dire, it’s worth working through the annoyance. Whether it’s a brother who grates on your nerves or a sister who knows how to push your buttons, maintain those connections. When life gets tough, you might be glad you did.

8. Thou Shalt Suck It Up

Life is hard for everyone, and while it’s okay to share your struggles, don’t let them become your identity. Seek support when needed, but also remember that countless others are navigating their own battles.

9. Thou Shalt Give Back

Engage in acts of kindness, whether through volunteering, donating, or simply being there for someone in need. It doesn’t matter what your beliefs are; kindness transcends all boundaries.

10. Thou Shalt Forgive Thyself

While you’re learning to be more forgiving of others, don’t forget to extend that grace to yourself. Perfection is unattainable; everyone has off days. Instead of dwelling on mistakes, allow yourself to reset and start fresh.

In essence, when life feels overwhelming, remember these simple truths: enjoy a glass of wine, show kindness, refrain from negativity, listen, love fiercely, face challenges head-on, give generously, and embrace your own humanity.
