During my first pregnancy, I felt utterly unheard. I was aware of the alarming statistic that Black women are three times more likely to face life-threatening complications than white women, yet my physician dismissed my concerns. I tried to convey the weight of my fears, emphasizing that despite appearing healthy on paper, the reality of healthcare disparities could mean a tragic outcome. Unfortunately, my doctor insisted I had nothing to worry about, leaving me feeling invalidated and anxious.
Seeking a more understanding physician for my second pregnancy proved challenging. Living in a rural part of Kentucky, I quickly discovered that there were no Black doctors accepting new patients within a reasonable distance. This experience deepened my resolve to help other Black women advocate for themselves during pregnancy and labor.
Now residing in Virginia, I am dedicated to empowering Black mothers-to-be. It’s crucial for us to find supportive healthcare professionals who will listen and validate our experiences.
