I’m a proud gun owner, with a couple of pistols, a rifle, and a shotgun in my collection. I also used to have a concealed carry permit, which has since expired. My experience with firearms dates back to my childhood, and yet, I fully endorse every gun control measure available. Here’s why:
1. Observations from Gun Shows
At gun shows, I’ve seen countless illegal cash transactions. Vendors bring firearms to sell but often end up making private sales in parking lots—no background checks, no bills of sale, and no formal ownership transfers. This happens all too frequently, and it’s illegal in many states!
2. Dangerous Behavior at the Range
Each time I visit the shooting range, I witness hazardous actions. I’ve been unintentionally aimed at over twenty times, experienced instances of improper ammunition use, and watched individuals struggle to manage firearms they’re not trained to use. Even kids or smaller adults firing large-caliber handguns can lead to dangerous situations. It’s alarming how many self-proclaimed “responsible” gun owners display reckless habits every single time I go to the range.
3. Handling Firearms Under the Influence
I’ve seen people handling guns while drunk, exhausted, or in a fit of anger. It’s an irresponsible and potentially fatal choice—one I would never consider.
4. A Disturbing Encounter
A friend of my ex-boyfriend once pointed a loaded gun at me just to show off. In a moment of panic, I dropped to the ground, realizing he had forgotten it was loaded. He was a high-ranking officer in the Navy, which only adds to the concern.
5. Concealed Carry Class Standards
In North Carolina, the class for obtaining a concealed carry permit is shockingly easy. After a two-day session, a straightforward written test, a background check, and fingerprinting, you only need to demonstrate basic shooting ability. That’s hardly adequate!
6. The Misguided “Hero Mentality”
The belief that a “good guy with a gun” can prevent chaos is fundamentally flawed. Without combat training, you’re more likely to accidentally harm another civilian or be misidentified by law enforcement as the perpetrator. Despite my skills with a rifle and pistol, in a life-threatening situation, I wouldn’t be able to do anything but contribute to the confusion.
7. Criticism of the NRA
I’ve labeled the NRA a terrorist organization. I was once a member for the discounts on range time but left after realizing my funds were supporting their harmful propaganda. Their communication is filled with unfounded fears of gun confiscation, which is simply not happening.
8. Home Protection Myths
While I understand the need for home protection—having lost a friend to a home invasion—I firmly believe that assault weapons like the AK-47 are not suitable for personal defense. A 12-gauge shotgun is a far more effective and realistic choice. I’ve yet to find any credible expert or study that contradicts this notion. Moreover, in a self-defense scenario, the risk of injuring oneself or having your firearm used against you is significantly higher.
These are my thoughts as a licensed and experienced gun owner. I actively support organizations like the Brady Campaign and Everytown for Gun Safety, and I plan to join Moms Demand Action. It puzzles me why other gun owners don’t support these initiatives. They are not trying to take away our rights; they’re advocating for common sense in firearm regulations—something we desperately need.

In summary, my experiences as a gun owner compel me to advocate for stricter gun control measures. The need for sensible regulations is clear, and it’s time for responsible gun owners to support this cause.
