Airlines Halt Alcohol Service Due to Rising Violence from Unruly Passengers

In light of increasing incidents of aggression among travelers, airlines like Southwest and American Airlines have decided to suspend in-flight alcohol service once again. This decision follows a recent viral incident where a female passenger assaulted a flight attendant over a mask dispute, resulting in the attendant losing two teeth.

Initially, airlines halted alcohol sales at the start of the pandemic to minimize contact between crew members and passengers. However, as complaints about passenger behavior have surged—especially regarding mask adherence—airlines are now opting to pause alcohol service due to safety concerns for their staff. Reports indicate that since January 1, 2021, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has logged around 2,500 instances of passenger misconduct, with nearly 1,900 related to mask violations. This represents a significant spike compared to the typical annual complaints of 100 to 150.

In response to the heightened risks, Southwest and American Airlines have decided to forgo reinstating alcohol service, recognizing that it could exacerbate the already tense atmosphere onboard. Southwest cited a “recent uptick industrywide of incidents in-flight involving disruptive passengers,” while American Airlines emphasized that alcohol could lead to unpredictable behavior, which they want to avoid for the safety of their crew.

Flight attendants are tasked with maintaining safety and enforcing federal mandates, such as mask-wearing, and have faced distressing situations as a result. Despite the alarming frequency of aggressive incidents, the FAA has reportedly only issued fines to five individuals this year.
