Dear 40-Year-Old Me

Hey there, future self. Let’s chat about something we both know all too well—body image and confidence, especially in swimwear. Remember that time you donned that G-string bikini at the pool party? You felt shy, clinging to the wall, but you owned it. Today, though? That daring spirit seems to have faded, leaving us with a backside that’s more timid than ever.

I still love swimming, but the current swimsuit situation? Let’s just say it leaves much to be desired. Earlier today, I faced the dreaded task of swimsuit shopping. All I wanted was a classic Speedo, but I had no clue what size to grab. In a rush, I grabbed a few suits and headed to the dreaded dressing room.

As I bent over to wiggle into the suit, my backside facing the mirror, a loud alarm suddenly blared. Panic set in—was I not allowed in here? Were my jiggly bits too shocking for others? Thoughts raced until I realized it was just my phone going off with an Amber alert. Thank goodness it wasn’t the fashion police!

After a few minutes of confusion, I hastily put my clothes back on, purchased the suit that was nowhere near as daring as that G-string, and got out of there. But hey, I’m still wearing a swimsuit! If I could rewind time, I’d strut my stuff on that deck, proud of my body and all it can do.

Embrace Your Body

Listen, I want you to embrace your body. Yes, it’ll change with age—gravity will do its thing—but it’s also going to experience so much joy. Think of all the dances at weddings, paddleboarding in Mexico, riding quads on the beach, and those epic water slides that make your heart race. Your body will be a pillow for tired kids and a vessel for endless laughter.

There will be days when you drag yourself out of bed and others when you never want the fun to end. It won’t be a perfect body, but it’s yours, and it fits you like a glove. So let go of all the “buts” and own it.
