Not long ago, I found myself chuckling at the trend of celebrities taking a stand for breastfeeding by doing it in public. The idea is that high-profile figures can help diminish the stigma surrounding public nursing. Yet, despite breastfeeding being a natural and fundamental part of parenting, the necessity of this movement highlights a troubling reality: there are still many individuals who are uncomfortable with a woman feeding her child in public spaces.

On my social media, I playfully questioned who these judgmental people are, shaming mothers for nurturing their babies. I can assure you that most of them have done far worse things in public!

First and foremost, let’s consider context. Whether you’re someone from a conservative background who deems it inappropriate or a man who can’t seem to grasp the biological nature of breastfeeding, it’s crucial to step back and reassess your perspective. Even if you find it distasteful (which, let’s be honest—it’s time to mature), the act of a parent nourishing their child is not only natural but miraculous.

Secondly, we encounter far more objectionable behaviors on a daily basis—many of which are less beneficial than breastfeeding. In fact, some common activities truly put public breastfeeding in perspective.

Public Activities That Are More Offensive Than Breastfeeding:

  • Nose-picking: This is not just unpleasant to witness, but the shame of being caught doing it should be enough for anyone to stop. Unlike breastfeeding, which is a source of life, this is just childish behavior.
    Benefit: Uh, saving on tissues?
  • Adjusting clothing: This type of behavior should stay on the sports field, not in everyday settings.
    Benefit: Comfort, I guess?
  • Clipping fingernails: Honestly, who thinks it’s okay to do this in public? The sound is bad enough, and it certainly doesn’t help anyone.
Benefit: I can’t think of one.
  • Spitting: Watching someone spit is far less appealing than seeing a mother feed her baby.
Benefit: Maybe it clears out phlegm?
  • Smoking: The smell is off-putting, and it harms others. Yet, smoking in public is often tolerated.
    Benefit: Feeling light-headed?
  • Fast food consumption: Eating greasy food in public is the antithesis of breastfeeding, which nourishes. Instead, you’re likely making a mess and damaging your health.
    Benefit: Convenience?
  • Urinating in public: While most of us don’t do this openly, men certainly line up at public restrooms. Is it really worse than seeing a mother breastfeed?
    Benefit: Comfort, I guess?
  • Twerking: Let’s just agree that this trend needs to end.
    Benefit: Exercise, maybe?

In contrast, breastfeeding is simply a means to sustain a helpless human being. It’s not indecent exposure, nor is it something to be flaunted. Most women take care to cover themselves, and the focus should be on the act of feeding—one that keeps babies alive.

So, let’s put things into perspective. The real issue that needs addressing is the mindset of those who choose to shame nursing mothers. For more insight on this topic, check out this blog post. Also, if you’re considering at-home insemination, I recommend Cryobaby’s syringe kits; they are a reputable source for these products. Additionally, for more comprehensive guidance on pregnancy and home insemination, Progyny offers excellent resources.

In summary, it’s disheartening that in our society we still need to combat the stigma surrounding breastfeeding in public. This essential act of nurturing should be celebrated, not shamed, and it’s time for everyone to recognize its significance.
