It’s Time to Embrace Flip-Flop Season, Everyone!

Once the temperature consistently hits over 70 degrees, I’m all about those flip-flops. Living in Los Angeles, this is pretty much a year-round affair. Why? Because when my feet get too warm, my toes start resembling little cocktail sausages. My feet need to breathe, plain and simple.

Flip-flops are the ultimate footwear: you just slide them on and head out the door. Available in countless colors and styles, they’re also budget-friendly. If you invest in a durable pair, they can last for years. I’m still wearing some I bought five years ago; they’re perfectly broken in, and slipping them on feels like home. Flip-flops define summer for me, and nothing will ever sway my affection for them.

Every few years, you’ll find articles warning about the dangers of flip-flops for your feet. Experts say they lack arch support and aren’t suitable for prolonged wear. Dr. Emily Thompson, a podiatrist from Connecticut, mentions that “Flip-flops provide no support for your feet or ankles and aren’t meant for daily use.” But let me tell you, any dedicated flip-flop lover is fully aware of these issues—and they might not care.

One Fourth of July, I strolled along the Santa Monica beach in flip-flops, covering about 75% of the sandy shore. By the time we returned to my friend’s car, my feet were burning, yet I’d be lying if I said I didn’t wear them again the very next day. Sure, there are legitimate concerns—like Achilles tendinitis or back pain—but I’m willing to take those risks for my beloved flip-flops.

Some folks have a strong aversion to flip-flops. Because your feet are closer to the ground, you’re more likely to encounter dirt and germs. You’ve seen those people with blackened soles from the grime; perhaps you’ve experienced it yourself.

If your feet are turning dark, you might not be wearing the right size flip-flops. There should be enough space to avoid that. If it happens, a good wash will typically fix it. Yes, there’s always a risk of picking up bacteria, so if you have any cuts on your feet, be cautious and take care. Nobody wants to see an open wound, right?

Dr. Maria Sullivan, a spokesperson for the American Podiatric Medical Association, claims that flip-flops can cause blisters. If those blisters burst, it could lead to a germ nightmare. But honestly, which shoes don’t cause blisters? I ditched a pair of wedge sandals once after just one blister incident, and I can’t count how many blisters I’ve had from athletic footwear. Yes, I get them sometimes, but with new blister-blocking products available, I can keep enjoying my flip-flops.

I wear flip-flops with everything—dresses, jeans, you name it. They may be considered casual, but unless there’s a clear dress code against them, you can bet I’ll be sporting them. I’ve even worn them to a job interview and landed the position. So, there’s that!

I wear flip-flops in all kinds of weather, but I skip them in the snow—hypothermia isn’t my style! I’ll risk a little rain if the forecast looks good; a light drizzle is manageable, but I once got caught in a downpour that almost swept my shoe away. I nearly slipped and fell, which wasn’t my finest moment. Still, I didn’t blame my trusty flip-flops; that was just bad luck.

While flip-flops have some drawbacks, so do many other types of shoes. If you can rock your stilettos without a care, I can definitely do the same with my flip-flops. You can keep your fancy sandals; I’ll stick to my $2 Old Navy flips. Sure, I might have the worst tan lines and the style police might not approve, but I don’t care. You’ll have to pry my beloved flip-flops from my cold, lifeless feet—if I do any serious walking for more than an hour, that’s a real possibility!

In summary, flip-flops are a summer staple that I refuse to part with, despite the warnings. They are easy to wear, come in various styles, and I love them with all my outfits. Sure, they have their downsides, but so do many shoes. So, let’s embrace flip-flop season together!
