As a mother who incorporates fitness into my routine with my little one by my side, I can tell you that those idyllic social media snapshots are often just that—pictures. The reality is that moments of tranquility, like when you’re trying to nail that Savasana pose, can quickly be interrupted by a baby’s playful raspberries on your belly or, heaven forbid, spit-up landing right in your mouth. But that’s the beauty of it all. Blending your baby into your daily life isn’t about achieving a picture-perfect existence. Parenting is full of chaotic and real moments—whether you view them as flaws or just part of the ride (Is my cup half-full, or am I just a step closer to no longer enjoying my coffee in peace?).
I’ve chosen to include my baby in almost every aspect of my life, and yes, it’s not always Instagram-ready, but it’s authentic. Here are some of my most memorable mommy-and-me activities:
Toilet Time
When I first saw that viral image of a mom peeing while nursing, I didn’t even realize what was controversial about it. I’ve nursed while using the bathroom a couple of times, but I’ve definitely taken my baby into public restrooms more times than I can remember. After all, what are you supposed to do when nature calls? And speaking of toilet time, I recently found myself squatting in the woods, baby in tow, and yes, I have no regrets.
Nursing on the Go
Just yesterday, while hiking with my baby strapped to me, she decided it was time for a snack. I didn’t have the luxury of stopping, so I pulled out my breast. I felt a bit bad because I was dripping in sweat, but hey, it worked for a while. I briefly thought about how I would explain this to anyone I might meet on the trail, but honestly, I didn’t care enough to make a plan. Free the nipple, right?
Grown-Up Socializing
Most of my friends are still child-free, so I rarely hire a babysitter unless absolutely necessary. As a result, I often engage in mommy-and-me socializing, whether that’s enjoying a coffee with a friend, having a drink at a bar, or catching some live music. My baby charms everyone—from baristas to band members. Sure, she occasionally swipes drinks off tables, but it’s a convenient way to enjoy social time together.
Appointments
Sometimes, I really wish I had a babysitter, but that’s not always possible. For instance, I had to get some X-rays done recently and had no one to watch the baby, so I brought her along. Ridiculous, right? Babies aren’t allowed in X-ray rooms, so I parked her in her stroller in the waiting area while the techs did their job. You know what? She usually handles these mommy-and-me activities like a champ, and when she doesn’t, we just adapt. I might not capture these moments for Instagram, but I won’t pretend she doesn’t disrupt my yoga poses.

In sum, blending your baby into your daily activities can be messy and imperfect, but that’s what makes it real. Embrace the chaos, whether it’s during yoga, socializing, or even bathroom breaks.
