Instead of Forgetting 2016, Let’s Learn from Its Lessons

As the year comes to a close, many have expressed a collective desire to leave 2016 behind. Whether it’s through social media rants or conversations with friends, phrases like “What a terrible year!” or “I can’t wait for 2017!” have become commonplace. While I can understand this sentiment, I believe there’s value in reflecting on what this year has taught us rather than simply erasing it from our memories.

For me personally, 2016 was a transformative year. I took the bold step of resigning from my position to pursue a passion in healthcare that I truly care about. Although this journey has come with its share of challenges, it has largely been rewarding. I’ve discovered new strengths and capabilities, paving the way for continued growth in the upcoming year.

Additionally, I found more quality time with my family, especially as I enjoyed precious moments with my youngest child before they enter school. With a flexible schedule, I was able to spend weekends and holidays together, enriching our familial bonds. I even completed two triathlons, which was a personal milestone. However, on a broader scale, the global narrative was far more troubling.

The divisive political climate in the U.S. highlighted deep societal rifts, regardless of political affiliation. Many can agree that the recent election was unlike any other, riddled with discord. Furthermore, this year was marred by various global crises, from the tragedy of Aleppo to the rise of hate speech, which forced us to confront uncomfortable truths about our society. The loss of iconic figures like Muhammad Ali and Carrie Fisher added to the somber tone of the year.

Yet, instead of succumbing to despair, we should use these experiences as lessons for the future. As the philosopher George Santayana wisely stated, “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” Rather than dismissing 2016, we can harness its lessons to shape our intentions for the new year.

2016 taught me that a divided society only grows more fractured when we ignore differing perspectives. In 2017, I resolve to actively listen to others, even when their viewpoints clash with my own. If we cannot find common ground as individuals, how can we expect our leaders to do so? Change must begin at the grassroots level.

Moreover, 2016 reminded me of the immense suffering faced by many in our world, including those in our local communities. In 2017, I aim to increase my charitable efforts, inspiring my children to partake in acts of kindness and community service. While I can’t solve every issue, I believe that collective small actions can lead to significant change.

Finally, this year has highlighted the persistence of racism, misogyny, and bigotry in our culture. Moving forward, I will not only stand against these injustices but also teach my children to be advocates for those who are marginalized. By instilling values of empathy and strength in my children, I hope they will grow up to be compassionate leaders.

In closing, while 2016 presented its fair share of challenges, let’s not forget the lessons we can carry into 2017. Together, we can transform our experiences into a foundation for a brighter future.
