It Used to Be So Exciting, Then We Became Parents

In the early days of our marriage, every evening felt electric with passion. I often reminisce about those intimate moments—slow and uninterrupted, where we explored each other with enthusiasm. We cherished each encounter, returning for more until we felt completely fulfilled. Our adventures took us to various spots around the house—the kitchen, the couch, even the patio under the stars.

But then, parenthood arrived, and suddenly, mealtime became an entirely different experience.

While many people prepare you for the challenges of raising children, nobody warns you that enjoying a hot meal will become an elusive dream for years. Even if you’re fortunate enough to have just one child, expect to wait several years before you can savor a meal without interruptions.

You can spend hours crafting a gourmet dinner or simply serve up some quick microwave mac and cheese—either way, you’ll find yourself in a never-ending loop of serving, preparing, and cleaning up before you can even think about taking a bite.

First, there’s the task of dishing out everyone else’s food. If you have multiple children, this can become a time-consuming endeavor. With toddlers, you’ll need to navigate their specific demands, from the color of their plate to the type of drink they want, which often leads to disputes. If your kids are picky eaters, you’ll spend additional time picking out any “yucky” bits—like onions or carrots—before they even see their plates.

As the attentive parent that you are, you’ll also ensure everything is cut into manageable, non-choking sizes. And if you happen to be a little particular about uniformity—well, that adds even more time. The irony hits when you realize that you’ll need to blow on your food until you feel lightheaded because it’s “too hot.”

Just as you finally sit down, ready to enjoy your meal, someone spills their drink. It’s always the smallest cup that somehow transforms into a colossal mess, requiring a mountain of paper towels to resolve. You might even forget to hand out napkins, which are essential in this chaotic scene.

Another child will drop their spoon, demanding a clean one because the dog decided to give it a taste. Of course, every clean spoon seems to have disappeared into the mysterious void where all lost utensils go. You either wash a spoon or give it a quick wipe on your shirt—no judgment here.

Amidst all this, someone will request salt or pepper, then complain about the amount. Another will notice the absence of the gummy vitamins you promised. If you manage to get everyone fed, don’t be surprised when one of them, having finished their meal, asks for seconds, requiring you to start the process all over again.

Dining out might slightly improve your chances of enjoying a hot meal, but the cutting and blowing are still there, along with the hefty price tag for a kids’ meal that will only result in two French fries being eaten.

Eventually, your children will grow older and you might once again experience the luxury of a relaxing dinner—until sports practices, friends’ visits, and other activities fill up your evenings, forcing you to rush through meals.

While the hope of leisurely dinners exists, it feels as realistic as winning the lottery or spontaneously combusting!

In the meantime, I highly recommend investing in a decent microwave. It will become your best friend during those chaotic mealtime moments. In summary, parenthood transforms even the simplest pleasures into complex challenges. Embrace the chaos, invest in good appliances, and remember that dinner is just one of many adventures on this journey of parenting.
