It was meant to be a simple, enjoyable outing at the park. Ever since spring arrived with its blooming flowers, I had been looking forward to taking my son to this specific park. I had chosen a trail that was gentle enough for a 4-year-old. Sure, there were a couple of inclines, but nothing too daunting. The reward? A stunning waterfall cascading into a sparkling pool, embraced by the soft beauty of maple and oak trees. I was sure my son would handle it just fine, and he did.

However, I completely underestimated my own physical endurance. Before we even reached the first hill, I was gasping for breath. My heart raced, my legs ached, and, oh no — that was my back acting up.

As I trudged along, it became painfully clear that my health had taken a nosedive over the years. In my younger days (before marriage and kids), I couldn’t have imagined the daily aches and pains I now experience. It seems that somewhere between the bright possibilities of early adulthood and the relaxing perks of retirement, there’s an awful lot of, “Well, that wasn’t how I pictured it.”

1. Friendships

The other day I glanced at my calendar and realized I hadn’t caught up with a friend for a real conversation (beyond social media) in months. How did that happen?

2. Physical Health

It’s becoming increasingly challenging to engage in active play with my kids. My knees are shot, and my back feels like it’s on a permanent vacation. These days, I push myself just a bit too far, and as I struggle to catch my breath, I long for the energy I had only a few years ago. Is it just me?

3. Energy

I’m perpetually exhausted. Sleep doesn’t seem to help; it merely dulls the fatigue. It’s more than just tiredness; it’s a profound weariness. I’m weary from the mountain of dishes in the sink, the three birthday parties looming ahead, and the fact that the dog just decided to redecorate my freshly cleaned carpet. Yeah, I’m weary.

4. Romance and Passion

I still enjoy outings with my partner, and we’ve settled into a comfortable routine. Yet, when a “memory” pops up on my social feed showcasing us laughing on the beach, I’m reminded of the fiery passion that once defined our relationship. We used to have so much fun!

5. Career

By now, many of us have been in our jobs long enough to savor a few significant victories. However, it feels like an eternity until we can chat with the retirement planner. Until then, we endure endless meetings, posturing, “urgent” tasks, and the yearly suspense of who will snag a promotion, award, or bonus. We might dream of quitting, but binge-watching series doesn’t pay the bills or fund college tuition.

6. Finances

Speaking of which, let’s not even delve deep into finances. Let’s just say balancing the costs of braces, travel soccer, and my 12-year-old’s data plan while discovering my sewage line needs repairs is quite the juggling act.

The beginnings of life are filled with excitement, and endings are meant to be savored. But what about this journey called middle age? Are we simply meant to endure this messy in-between while hoping for relief? Or can we uncover joy, excitement, and peace amid the chaos and monotony?

We know the answer. Middle age bridges the thrill of youth and the comfort of later years. Those of us immersed in this phase understand the importance of savoring both while peering into the future. If we allow it, this can be a tremendous gift.

The beauty of middle age lies in finding contentment within the ordinary. We can embrace joy amid tears, lean into chaos, and find solace in solitude. So, yes, I might have overexerted myself during that spring hike with my son. However, the truth is, it was all worth it.

We reached the waterfall, and as I sat on a log near the water’s edge, massaging my aching legs, I couldn’t help but smile. My son was having a blast! His happiness lightened my burdens. We lingered a moment longer, and as he gathered stones to toss into the pool, I closed my eyes and soaked in the sound of rushing water.

I may be “in the middle,” but the hard part is behind me. Going downhill should be easier, right? Either way, there’s always Advil.
