As a parent, one of the biggest hurdles I face is the need to slow down and truly absorb the moments with my children. While I may not be the perfect parent, I do value every lesson they offer, whether positive or negative. Recently, I was chatting with my 5-year-old daughter about removing the training wheels from her bike so she could ride it like a “big kid.”
She hesitated, expressing her fear of riding without the training wheels because of the potential for injury. Recognizing that children learn best in small, digestible segments, I explained that life is a continuous journey of learning, no matter our age. Transitioning from a bike with training wheels to a two-wheeled cycle that can tip over can indeed be intimidating, so like any well-intentioned parent, I tried to encourage her to push through her fear.
Sitting down with her on the warm pavement, we shared a laugh about how sometimes we just need to “suck it up.” I reassured her that feeling scared about new experiences is completely normal. I went on to explain that throughout life, we will often encounter situations that are unfamiliar, but facing these challenges is essential for personal growth. If we allow fear to dominate our choices, we risk stagnation.
In that moment, my daughter looked up at me with an intensity I hadn’t seen before. She said, “Dad, you can’t change anything if you’re scared.” I was taken aback by her insight and realized that she was spot on. I reminded her to hold on to that thought—it was profound coming from someone so young.
This moment led me to reflect on how adults often complicate life unnecessarily. Change is a natural part of existence, and though it may trigger anxiety or fear, these feelings are just instincts meant to protect us. Embracing change, whether in our careers or personal lives, is crucial. While not everyone can change the world, if we allow fear to dictate our actions, we may never even attempt to try.
Life will inevitably present challenges and discomfort, but those experiences are integral to our journey. Once we learn to confront life without fear and embrace its unpredictability, everything becomes more meaningful. Thanks for the wisdom, kiddo. Someday, I hope you read this and realize that at just 5 years old, you transformed my perspective.
