Last night, I indulged in a ridiculously hot bath, grabbed a captivating novel, poured myself a glass of wine, applied a mud mask, and sank into six glorious minutes of “Me Time” before my little ones summoned me from the other end of the house.
Even though my partner was home, my kids seem to believe I possess magical powers, like a human magic eight ball, merely waiting to respond to their whims. “Yes, you can leap off the couch onto the dog.” “Absolutely, you can devour all the ice cream.” “Of course, binge-watching TV until your eyes resemble bloodshot saucers is totally fine!”
I don’t feel an ounce of guilt when, at least twenty times a day, I find myself eagerly anticipating the moment my little gremlins are tucked away in their rooms—upstairs and away from my sight. Why? Because once they’re sound asleep, I get a fleeting chance to relish my own version of relaxation before diving into cleaning and prepping for yet another day of prioritizing everyone else’s needs.
Just like the age-old saying, “this too shall pass,” I take solace in savoring these mom guilty pleasures:
- Sipping wine. (obviously)
- Indulging in cake. (totally)
- Ignoring cleaning for at least an hour.
- Watching mindless TV until my brain feels fuzzy.
- Scrolling through Facebook, Twitter, or my 53 go-to Mom Blogs.
- Pampering myself with a mud mask.
- Opening the fridge and just gazing inside for a while.
- Enjoying the rare luxury of peeing alone.
- Having seconds of whatever was for dinner.
- Googling odd things like, “Vasectomy,” “Summer art projects for toddlers,” or “Is it too late for Law School?”
- Painting my toenails a vibrant Hunter Orange or a chic Tiffany Blue.
- Ditching my bra (and pants).
- Calling up a friend for some gossip.
- Writing down my thoughts.
- Treating myself to a spoonful of peanut butter with a sprinkle of chocolate chips.
- Taking a long soak in the tub.
- Letting my hair down without fear of a child yanking it.
- Cursing like a sailor.
- Venting to my partner about our children’s antics.
- Flipping through trashy magazines.
- Pinning diet trends, recipes, crafts, and Mom humor on Pinterest.
- Shopping on Amazon.
- Quietly removing batteries from noisy kid toys.
- Vowing to go to bed before the 11 p.m. news.
- When that fails, giving myself a midnight pep talk for the next day.
- Briefly contemplating a vegan lifestyle, yoga, or volunteering.
- Looking up my newfound interests in vegan yoga volunteerism online.
- Getting sidetracked by trendy stretchy pants that hide muffin tops.
- Sneaking in one more spoonful of peanut butter (or ice cream).
- Finally crawling into bed.
