Moms Who Own It – Embrace Your Greatness!

I get it, truly. All types of moms deserve to feel empowered—working moms, stay-at-home moms, slender moms, and curvy moms alike. Yet, amidst the celebration of the everyday mom who grapples with body image issues, parenting blunders, and societal pressures, are we merely settling for mediocrity? Is “good enough” becoming our new standard?

While honesty is crucial, the phrase “I’m not the perfect mom, and that’s alright!” seems to be fostering a troubling trend. When did aiming for greatness become a negative attribute?

Take, for instance, a friend of mine, Sarah, who holds three degrees and has won a Pulitzer Prize. Yet, she feels compelled to lament about her burnt cookies just to fit in at her local playgroup. Another acquaintance, Jessica, whose son was accepted into Yale, downplays her excitement so her relatives won’t feel awkward during family gatherings.

High-achieving women often downplay their accomplishments to make others feel more comfortable. They shouldn’t have to. What happened to celebrating our successes and looking up to women who are unapologetically fierce?

Don’t misunderstand me; I’m not advocating for a social media parade of our achievements. It’s unwise to put anyone on a pedestal, as it can lead to a swift fall. Laughing at our mishaps is a healthy way to cope. However, let’s not downplay our triumphs. When someone congratulates us for completing a marathon in under five hours, we don’t need to comment on our muffin tops.

Media outlets should spotlight women who not only balance family life but also excel in various fields. Why? Because it’s uplifting to hear about women like us who are making waves. I used to read about celebrities like Beyoncé and think, “Well, she can do it all because of her resources.” But I recently came across an article about a woman who published yet another bestseller, only to attribute her success entirely to her husband’s substantial income. This mindset gives the rest of us a convenient excuse for not striving harder.

Why aren’t we inspired by stories of female scientists, Nobel laureates, or courageous medical professionals in the same way we are by reality television? We mothers and wives don’t need more justifications for being “normal.” The pressure to conform is pervasive, yet many of us are thriving in our careers, training for Ironman competitions, crafting compelling essays, mastering new languages, or even earning black belts. We draft legislation and save lives while raising compassionate, honor roll kids. We’re organized and proud of our bodies. We look at our families and feel a swell of pride.

Our partners pitch in with household chores, yet we don’t have a full-time staff or million-dollar budgets. We are achieving our dreams and more.

And we should never, ever apologize for it.
