It’s a Saturday morning, and I’m racing against the clock to snag a spot in my favorite 8 a.m. step class. The usual attendees are primarily women in their late 30s to early 50s. Today, however, I walk in behind two fresh-faced first-time moms. I overhear their conversation, and it hits home:
“You look fantastic! You’re so slim,” says Sarah to her friend Emily, both cradling their adorable babies under a year old.
Emily responds with a slight frown, “I’m still a bit heavier than I was before Max.”
From my perspective, Emily looks undeniably slim. As a mom of three and a fitness enthusiast, I’ve become quite familiar with this body image struggle.
“Totally! I can’t run as far as I used to before Mia, and it’s tough to keep the weight off. But I can’t give up my wine,” Sarah adds with a laugh.
You go, girl! Wine is essential. I watch them head toward childcare, fully understanding their feelings. Here’s what I want to share with them:
1. You Will Never Look the Same Again
Your body has transformed, and it’s a permanent change. Even if you manage to shed the post-baby weight, those pounds will settle in new places. For me, I’ve noticed some areas that are harder to accept, like the way my backside peeks out of my swimsuit or the skin fold at my knees from carrying extra weight for nine months (three times!). On the flip side, I’ve gained a more pronounced curve to my hips and luscious hair due to hormones.
2. Your Body Will Function Differently
Not only does your appearance change, but your body’s capabilities do too. I’ve accepted that running five miles without feeling a painful twinge in my hip is likely a thing of the past. Achieving a flat belly is a distant dream, no matter how many crunches I attempt. I can’t even do jumping jacks without a little accident. Two and a half years after my youngest arrived, I’m still navigating what works for me and letting go of what doesn’t.
3. Your Body Will Achieve Incredible Feats
Despite the changes, your body will surprise you. You’ll rise for the fourth time at night to feed a hungry baby without hesitation. You’ll be able to hold your infant or toddler for extended periods, building strength and definition in your arms. I discovered just how fast I can run when my little one darted toward a busy parking lot. Embrace your new mama body and all its capabilities.
4. Beauty is Found Everywhere
The chatter surrounding post-pregnancy beauty is unending. Yes, our bodies may sag and shift, but that doesn’t define our worth. The challenge lies in reframing our perception of beauty. I find beauty in my daughter’s long eyelashes as she sleeps and even in the messiness of parenthood. The soft lines around my eyes tell a story of joy and sleepless nights. Your newfound curves? They’re attractive too—period.
These are the realities of my post-baby body. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t experience bouts of jealousy toward celebrity moms, complete with trainers and meal prep services. I’m not thrilled about my weaker bladder, persistent back pain, or my collection of Spanx. But instead of lamenting what’s lost, why not celebrate the incredible journey of motherhood? Let’s embrace the bodies we have and, of course, never give up the wine.

Summary
Post-baby bodies undergo significant changes that can be challenging to accept. While our appearance and physical capabilities may transform, our bodies can also accomplish remarkable feats. It’s essential to redefine beauty and embrace the journey of motherhood, celebrating our bodies as they are.
