Are You a Challenging Parent?

Three weeks ago, my nine-year-old son took a tumble during his basketball playoff game and broke his ankle. There’s no dramatic story behind it; he simply tripped while sprinting down the court. This Friday, he’ll finally be getting his bright orange cast removed—a fact he can’t wait to share with anyone who asks, anyone who doesn’t ask, and even the unsuspecting high school student at the local cookie shop.

Let me tell you, he is beyond excited to finally ditch that Sunkist accessory from his leg. But I must commend him for handling the entire situation like a true champion—always smiling, never complaining. To understand why this moment is so significant, some background is necessary. My son, at the age of two, was what many would call a “challenging” toddler. He was the kid who threw at least five tantrums each morning before we could even step out the door. You know the type—upset because the tag on his shirt was irritating, the seam in his socks wasn’t aligned correctly, or because the chocolate chip cookies I packed had actual chocolate chips in them. The list goes on and on.

I spent countless hours during those trying toddler years trying to “fix” my son, and even more time washing out empty wine glasses. What I didn’t do was consider starting an Instagram account where other parents could share their experiences with their own little fit-throwers, complete with a brief description and the hashtag #challengingparent. This was, of course, before Instagram even existed. However, blogger and mother of four, Lisa Martinez, did create such an account. It turns out, she and I are not alone in this parenting journey.

Check out this hilarious post, for example: insert example here. And then there’s this one: insert example here. Funny, right? Because nothing brings comfort quite like knowing we’re not in this alone. As Lisa told The Huffington Post, “Even with our best intentions, kids can often face disappointments, and I hope this serves as a lighthearted reminder that we’re all navigating this together.”

If that sentiment rings a bell, you might just be my kindred spirit. But a word of caution: think twice before sharing your parenting struggles online, as every moment of vulnerability is just one screenshot away from going viral. While every child eventually grows out of their difficult toddler years, the label of a challenging parent can stick around far longer.

In summary, parenting is a wild ride filled with ups and downs. As we navigate these challenges, let’s embrace the humor and remind ourselves that we’re all in this together.
