Dear Champion,
I refer to you as a champion because that’s how I perceive individuals living with chronic illness. These remarkable individuals showcase immense bravery in navigating the fear and unpredictability that often accompany their lives. They maintain compassion and a hopeful outlook, even when facing mistreatment or isolation from others. They radiate smiles through their struggles and often use humor to ease the tension, even when they may be feeling overwhelmed. They encounter emotions and experiences that many people might only encounter a few times in their lives.
However, it’s not uncommon for champions to feel like a liability at times. This feeling can be ignited by an insensitive remark from a family member or a misguided comment from a social media acquaintance. Such negativity can strike at our very core, whispering thoughts of inadequacy and difference. It may suggest that we are not enough for the people we care about or society as a whole.
In those moments of doubt, we must actively confront those negative thoughts. We cannot allow the misguided opinions of a few to take root in our minds. Max Lucado once beautifully stated, “You are valuable just because you exist. Not because of what you do or what you have done, but simply because you are.” This reminds us that our worth is inherent; we are all deserving simply by being human.
It’s a reality we may face feelings of inadequacy throughout our journeys, but what truly matters is how we respond to those feelings. Our society often equates ability with worth, leading to judgments against those perceived as “less active” or “less contributing.” What many fail to recognize is that we didn’t choose our circumstances; they were assigned to us. But we have alternative ways to contribute positively to the world. Sometimes, existing as we are is a significant contribution in itself.
Don’t squander precious moments feeling like a liability. If we could alter our situations, we surely would. Instead, let’s support one another and demonstrate how misguided those perceptions are. And if the term “liability” creeps into our thoughts, may we swiftly replace it with “champion.”
Stay resilient,
Fellow Champion

In summary, we must remember that our value is not defined by our circumstances or abilities but by our inherent worth as human beings. Let’s uplift each other and redefine our narratives from liabilities to champions.
