The 13 Best Aspects of Raising a 13-Year-Old Girl: A Doctor’s Perspective

My daughter recently celebrated her 13th birthday, and I find myself reflecting on how quickly time has flown. It feels like just yesterday she was taking her first steps, and now she’s in full swing of her teenage years, often expressing her feelings with statements like, “You don’t get me, and I’m so ugly!” Ah, the joys of parenting!

In light of her transition into adolescence, I’ve compiled a list of the 13 best things about parenting a 13-year-old girl:

  1. I no longer have to remember everything, as I am constantly reminded that I “just don’t even know.”
  2. Listening to today’s pop music serves as a stark reminder of how much I preferred the classics. Seriously, I can’t help but think that any song from my youth is better than what’s out now.
  3. Phrases like “don’t even” have replaced my use of “even,” which is quite liberating.
  4. I’ve got my very own fashion critic at home. Who knew I needed one? She’s always ready to give her opinion on my wardrobe choices!
  5. My cooking skills are rapidly improving, thanks to my little food critic. She’s not shy about telling me how to enhance my dishes, often using words like “ugh,” “fine,” and “whatevs.”
  6. I’m honing my negotiation skills. I’ve moved from the classic “You better behave when I count to three” to casually asking for a glass of Merlot during discussions.
  7. I’ve developed a newfound appreciation for logic amidst the chaos.
  8. I’ve successfully canceled cable! The drama from her recounting of a five-minute study hall incident is far more entertaining than an entire season of a popular TV show.
  9. I find myself walking more often; I’m becoming an expert at navigating the mall with various clothing items while hearing “no,” “ick,” and “seriously, Mom” in rapid succession. My calves are definitely feeling the burn!
  10. I always have someone to assist me with my iPhone, often before I even realize I need help.
  11. I’m discovering hidden talents, such as the ability to evoke a range of moods from my daughter in under five seconds.
  12. I’m learning a new language composed of eye rolls, door slams, foot stomps, and exaggerated sighs, which seems to be a complete conversation in itself.
  13. My heart swells with love daily. Despite the challenges, she is the greatest joy in my life.

In all seriousness, she’s an incredible kid whom I love dearly. I look forward to the day when she’ll proudly embrace our relationship again, without the teenage angst.
