Dear Leonard,
While we share an everlasting bond through our beloved Vulcan character, our face-to-face interactions have been limited—perhaps three or four encounters at most. This makes it a bit awkward for me to reach out, as I feel our meetings were too brief for me to convey much. I’m sure your close friends and family have countless stories and sentiments to share. Yet, the profound nature of film—capturing a moment in time that is relived by audiences worldwide for years—does create an undeniable connection between us.
Though this link may not touch upon our true selves, it nonetheless binds us as actors, as devoted interpreters of Spock, a legacy that I hope endures long after we are gone. My sincere wish is that this iconic figure, this embodiment of human logic and compassion, remains cherished for generations to come.
I believe our first encounter was at a Star Trek convention in Las Vegas during the summer of 2009 when I was just 14. Backstage, before we took the stage with the wonderful Zach Quinto, we crossed paths. While I can’t recall the exact words you shared, your demeanor left a lasting impression: humble, gracious, and genuinely engaged. I hate to pull the “Stars: They’re Just Like Us” card, but you truly were as approachable as a favorite uncle. From everything I had heard, you embodied kindness and humility, and it was heartening to see that your fame hadn’t tarnished your innate goodness.
Unfortunately, my memory of our conversation has faded, but perhaps words are merely vessels for emotions. I sensed nothing but warmth and camaraderie from you.
When we took the stage alongside Zachary Quinto in front of a captivated audience of Trekkies, it was a moment I will never forget. There’s a video online if you’re interested in reliving that experience. Standing together, we were three individuals with little to say, yet we represented something far greater: a narrative that had solidified its place in cultural history, the enduring legacy of Spock, and the joy our character has brought to countless lives.
At one point, you playfully remarked on my attempts to be charming: “He’s not at all like he is in the movie, is he? He’s like, ya know, ‘hey, hey!’” That might have been the most astute analysis I’ve ever received. You embraced Zach, wished us well as we exited, and then turned to the audience with a bright smile, exclaiming, “Isn’t that fantastic?” It truly was beyond what words can capture.
Thank you, Leonard, and the world is grateful for your humanity. Live long and prosper, Mr. Nimoy.
