10 Reasons I Can’t Answer the Phone Right Now

10 Reasons I Can’t Answer the Phone Right Nowlow cost IUI

A friend recently suggested I write about the chaotic world of motherhood and how it has utterly transformed my ability to chat on the phone. While she joked, it’s actually spot on! Before becoming a mom, I was the queen of long chats, saying things like, “Hey, Sarah! Got time for a 45-minute gab session?” Now, I’m that person who rushes through calls in hushed tones, either because the baby is awake and needs my undivided attention or she’s napping, and I’m tiptoeing around like a ninja praying the silence lasts more than 20 minutes.

Here’s why I can’t pick up the phone right now:

  1. I intended to call you, but my little one decided to have a major spit-up episode. Cleaning that up led me to notice the floors were filthy, so I ended up mopping them. Naturally, once I started cleaning, the baby realized she was being ignored and started crying.
  2. The baby is napping, which gives me a limited window—30 minutes to an hour—to squeeze in a shower, tackle laundry, clean up the toys, tidy the kitchen, and pay bills. Instead, I find myself sitting on the couch, frustrated that I can’t even chat with friends.
  3. It’s nighttime, and with the baby finally asleep, all I want to do is zone out with some mindless TV. Even picking up the phone to discuss the latest show feels like too much effort.
  4. I had every intention of calling you, but I got caught up in my to-do list. Now it’s 10 PM, and I need to hit the sack before my baby wakes up for a midnight snack.
  5. Ah, the allure of social media! One moment I was going to call, and the next I’m lost in Facebook, Instagram, or the latest celebrity gossip.
  6. I made the decision to enjoy a meal in silence instead.
  7. My husband, who also wants to chat, has reminded me that I made some kind of lifelong agreement to engage with him (there was a ring involved, so you know it’s serious).
  8. I honestly can’t find my phone. Where could it be?
  9. My boss—aka the baby—is relentless. She’s constantly demanding, “Play with me! Sing to me! Take me for walks!” There’s zero work-life balance; the toothless tyrant always wins.
  10. I feel like I have nothing interesting to share. I’m just so tired! This typically leads to conversations like this:

You: Hey! How are you?
Me: Good, you?
You: Great! What’s new?
Me: Not much. You?
You: (Shares exciting updates)
Me: That’s cool!
You: (Continues with interesting news)
Me: Sounds great!
You: I gotta run, talk later!
Me: Bye!
You: (Thinking: Has she always been this dull?)
Me: (Thinking: Come on, step it up!)

Honestly, I like you too much to subject you to that.

In summary, motherhood has turned my phone communication skills upside down, transforming me into a whirlwind of chores, baby demands, and brief interactions. I’m always eager to chat, but finding the time and energy is another story!
