A close friend of mine welcomed her first child just a month after I had my second. Since then, she’s been sharing on social media how drastically her life has changed since becoming a mother. She often mentions her back pain and the struggle of carrying an extra ten pounds. Recently, she asked, “When will I feel like myself again?”
I responded honestly: NEVER. You will never be the person you once were.
Your back may always experience discomfort. Your breasts may not have the same firmness. Your abdomen might retain a slight pooch. Your hips could be a touch wider. Your hair, skin, and even your bladder control will not return to their previous states, for better or worse.
Sleep will never be the same again. You may find yourself in nursing bras for an extended period. Privacy in the bathroom will be a luxury you won’t enjoy for a few years. You might find your conversations revolving around bodily functions more often than you anticipated. Expect to say goodbye to crumb-free floors. For a while, you might not wear anything that isn’t stained. Regular nail and hair appointments may fall by the wayside. Daily chores like laundry and dishwashing may not always be completed.
Yes, all of this is true.
However, what I didn’t mention is this:
Your smile will be more radiant than ever. Your laughter will resonate with joy. Your eyes will shine with a new light. Your arms will feel fuller. Your heart will overflow with love. The affection you hold will be immeasurable.
So, yes, after bringing a child (or multiple children) into this world, you will never be the same again. But that’s perfectly fine because you wouldn’t want to be.

In summary, the journey of motherhood transforms every aspect of your being. While some physical changes may be challenging, the emotional and joyful growth that accompanies this journey is invaluable. Embrace the new you; it’s a beautiful evolution.
