Michael Richards takes on the role of a cutthroat business executive in the indie thriller, Beyond the Reach, hitting theaters on April 17. While he enjoys portraying villainous characters, in reality, the Oscar and Emmy-winning actor embraces a much more laid-back lifestyle, prioritizing family above all else.
Having triumphed over throat cancer and navigated a public separation from his partner, Isabella, the two have rekindled their relationship and are devoted to their children, son Miles and daughter Zoe. Richards is also committed to advocating for his eldest son, Jake, who is currently serving time for a non-violent offense related to substance use.
At 70, Richards sat down with interviewer Lisa Grey to discuss family dynamics, love, and his newfound outlook on life.
Do you think working on indie films contributes to your youthful spirit?
Absolutely. After overcoming cancer, I feel like I’m experiencing a renaissance. Projects like Beyond the Reach excite me, especially with the challenges of filming in demanding locations under tight timelines. It’s a thrill reminiscent of my early independent film days, back to when I worked on One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. It’s revitalizing!
Was it tough balancing your rise to stardom with parenthood?
Definitely. In my early years, my career was my main focus, which meant I wasn’t as present for my eldest son, Jake, as I wish I could have been. Now, with the wisdom that comes with age, I’ve shifted my priorities. I’m delighted to see many people opting to start families later in life, allowing them to enjoy parenthood without the added pressure of career-building at the same time.
How is Jake doing? You’ve been very supportive of him.
He’s managing, but it’s been a challenging journey for him as a non-violent drug offender incarcerated for over six years. I worry about him; he’s made errors, and he’s paying the price. Despite everything, he retains a wonderful spirit. I saw him recently, and I’m hopeful that next year might bring better news.
Having a teenager again must be quite the experience!
Oh, you have no idea! My son Miles is now 14, and it’s a whole new ball game. Teenagers often think they know everything and that parents are clueless! Someone once joked that I should just wait until he’s in college; maybe then he’ll think, “Wow, Dad, you’ve really matured over the years!”
You and Isabella are back together. Do you feel your bond has strengthened after your separation?
Absolutely. I believe every relationship faces its share of challenges. I’m proud of how Isabella and I have navigated our obstacles. We’ve emerged with a deeper love and connection than ever before. Often, perseverance is the key to making things work.
Have the ups and downs of recent years changed your perspective?
For sure! I don’t know if it’s due to the hardships or just aging, but I feel a greater appreciation for life. With my father, who’s now 98, my young kids, and Isabella, I realize how rewarding nurturing family can be. I don’t mind taking on the role of Mr. Mom either!
In summary, Michael Richards reflects on the importance of family and the growth that comes from overcoming life’s challenges. His experiences have reshaped his priorities and deepened his connections with loved ones.
