Bearers of Light

I’ll never forget the very first email I received two years ago from a woman who was the recipient of my gift card through a Thanksgiving meal donation initiative. She didn’t know much about me—just my name—but she referred to me as her “Thanksgiving angel.” Beneath that heartfelt compliment, she shared something personal: the names of her five children. I poured over each lovely name, tears streaming down my face. In that moment, I realized this connection was profound and would change lives.

This is our story…

That initial note from Emma marked the beginning of a beautiful correspondence. It felt like catching up with an old friend as we exchanged details about where we lived, our children, and our interests. As a writer, I was captivated by Emma’s eloquence—her messages radiated openness, authenticity, and acceptance. I felt I could share my deepest insecurities with her, knowing a kind and compassionate spirit would be there to listen.

With each passing day, our emails grew longer, and Emma began to share more about her life, which had taken a difficult turn following her husband’s unexpected job loss. In her sixth email, I realized our exchanges were serving as a form of therapy for her. She wrote, “I’m just marveling at how grateful I am not only to provide meals for my kids but to have ‘met’ you. I’ve been able to explore emotions I’d kept buried while navigating the challenges of our new reality as an unemployed family.”

I eagerly anticipated each message from Emma, and the bond between us flourished. Although her updates included heart-wrenching details—like selling their family car and struggling to afford birthday gifts for her children—there was always an undercurrent of humor, hope, and, most importantly, light. Emma’s light shone through even in the darkest times.

A few weeks after sending Emma the gift card, I was dining with friends when one of them asked if I knew any families in need during the holidays. I could only nod, unable to find the words. Eventually, I shared about Emma’s five children who needed a sprinkle of Christmas magic. By the end of the meal, everyone at the table was eager to help by donating gifts and food vouchers.

This spirit of generosity continued for months. Readers of my blog began reaching out, asking if I knew any families who could use assistance. I always used the same email Emma had initially received when I forwarded her details to those willing to help. With each email sent, hope seemed to blossom, creating a ripple effect of kindness.

Miraculously, the gifts from these unexpected angels arrived just when they were most needed—when Emma faced a Type 2 diabetes diagnosis, when her husband required emergency dental surgery, and just after her daughter’s frightening skiing accident. Thanks to one donor, Emma was able to buy a plane ticket to visit her ailing mother and sisters.

She was only a state away. Determined to see me, Emma posted on Facebook asking if anyone wanted to join her on a road trip. A middle school friend stepped up and drove Emma and her baby six hours round trip to meet me.

When we hugged, it felt like two sisters reuniting after years apart. We sat on the floor, watching her youngest explore toys as my daughters entertained him. He radiated happiness, embodying the light of his mother. Despite the struggles he and his family faced, his joyful spirit was unmistakable.

As I reflected on everyone who had contributed to nurturing Emma’s light—from Jill to a kindhearted soul in Georgia helping her husband find work—I realized that each act of love had protected her light from being extinguished. While it sometimes flickered, it remained bright enough to inspire the small bearers of light in her life.
