7 Things Moms Should Be Able to Deduct From Their Taxes

Tax season is upon us! It’s that time of year when we’re reminded that our beloved little ones are also adorable little tax credits—what a joy! There’s always a debate online about whether motherhood counts as a “job.” Some claim it’s the most challenging job, equating it to being a chef, accountant, and even a doctor. Others argue that no one forced you to have kids, so it’s not a job at all. Honestly, I can’t stand both extremes. Parenting is undeniably tough enough to be considered a job, but I won’t compare my responsibilities to a doctor’s anytime soon.

In my imaginary world where parenting is a legitimate profession, here are the essentials I should be able to write off. Let’s face it, I can’t do this gig without them!

  1. Coffee. Let’s kick things off with the magic elixir of life for all exhausted parents. Without my morning jolt, I’d be a walking zombie. My kids deserve better than that!
  2. Wine. After wrangling a rowdy toddler into pajamas, a glass of wine is my well-deserved reward. It’s practically a parenting necessity!
  3. Yoga Pants. Yes, I’m embracing the stereotype, but stretchy pants keep me comfy while I tackle my daily chaos. Can I still say I’m in the postpartum phase if my youngest is under two? Asking for a friend.
  4. Goldfish Crackers. These little snacks aren’t just for the kids; they’re often my dinner after a long day. They pair surprisingly well with wine, too!
  5. Cable TV. To all the moms who claim they do without it—are you superheroes or just really organized? I could use a little help!
  6. Concealer. Thank you, makeup gods, for the ability to hide my sleep-deprived eyes. It’s my secret to pretending I’m functioning like a normal adult.
  7. Boxed Macaroni and Cheese. This classic staple saves me on those days when my kids would probably skip dinner if it weren’t for some gooey pasta.

If I could just write off all these essentials, my deductions would be through the roof! But alas, reality bites.
