Things have been pretty uneventful on the parenting front lately, and for a “mommy blogger,” my kids’ typical behavior often leaves me scrambling for entertaining material. So instead of turning my poor children into punchlines, I’ve decided to share some of my own parenting misadventures. Admittedly, it took some digging to remember these moments because A. they weren’t all recent, B. I’m pretty sure I lost a few IQ points with each child, and C. let’s just say my fondness for wine has rendered some of my memories a bit fuzzy.

Let’s dive in, shall we? Here are some of my top parenting blunders:

1. The Great Swing Disaster

Back in 2002, we were enjoying a sunny afternoon at my in-laws’ house. My daughter, Lily, who was just over a year old, was eager to try out the new toddler swing my father-in-law had hung from a magnificent oak tree. We swung back and forth, having a great time, until I thought it would be brilliant to push the swing in circles—kind of like a tire swing. With Lily securely strapped in, I didn’t think it would be a problem. Imagine my shock when the swing tipped over, and my baby was dangling sideways, screaming in terror! Instead of simply catching her as she circled back around, my first instinct was to scream, “Daddy, catch her, catch her!!!” while frantically running after her. Thankfully, my husband and father-in-law had the sense to stop the swing. She was totally fine, and looking back, it was quite the scene—hilarious in retrospect, not so much at the time.

2. The Quarter Horse Incident

About six years ago, we visited a friend who lived in the countryside. Their home was not very kid-proof, but we did our best to keep an eye on things while enjoying a late-night gathering. The next morning, I awoke to discover that my son, Jake, was missing. After searching the house and yard, I hopped into the truck in my pajamas to comb the area. Out in the front yard, I spotted a glint of sunlight near the horse barn. I rushed over to find Jake standing barefoot and diaper-clad between the legs of a hefty quarter horse named Thunder, who was playfully nibbling on his hair! In my quest to keep everyone safe, I had forgotten to lock the front door.

3. The Muddy Birthday Catastrophe

More recently, we were back in the country, where we decided to create our own entertainment with a vintage plastic water slide, a high-powered golf cart, and a tow rope. Initially, it was a blast—kids were thrilled, and the adults enjoyed the show. However, things took a turn when my husband and the golf cart driver thought it would be hilarious to drive two girls through what they believed was a shallow puddle. Spoiler alert: it was a small lake! The slide sank when it hit the water, and a massive wave of mud splashed over the girls. Did I mention it was one of their birthdays? EPIC fail.

Of course, there are the usual parenting missteps we all experience—like when kids misbehave only to spike a fever or when a well-intentioned joke ends up scaring them silly. But these stories are my personal highlights of the fail department. What’s fantastic about these experiences is that they turn into cherished memories we can laugh about later. Just saying, “This is the WORST birthday EVER!” sends my kids into fits of giggles. The truth is, we all mess up sometimes, and I genuinely believe that being able to chuckle at ourselves is the only way to survive the delightful chaos of parenting. I look forward to more moments that leave me sputtering in indignation or laughter because it makes it all worthwhile.
