As we journey through different phases of life, friendships can change as we embrace new roles. From childhood pals to college buddies and now, as a parent, I’ve experienced the ebb and flow of friendships. Thankfully, many of my closest friends have stuck around, some for over half my life. As my little one approaches his first birthday (how did that happen?), I want to share a few things with my dear friends who knew me before I became a mom.
- I appreciate your good intentions, but I often feel out of sorts in this new mom body. If I lament about missing my old size 4 dresses, just nod and offer some encouragement—even if we both know it’s a stretch.
- Please refrain from asking if you can have my pre-baby clothes. They’ll fit again… eventually.
- If I have to pick between a social life and some much-needed sleep, sleep will win every time. Same goes for working out and Netflix. (But if you want to binge-watch with me, I’m in!)
- Pregnancy and parenthood are a wild mix of beautiful and bizarre. I’m not equating childbirth to combat, but if you’re interested, I’d gladly share my “battle” stories.
- I long to escape for a night out, but my little one can’t sleep without me, so I’m tethered to home.
- I adore your dog, but when I’m running on minimal sleep, please don’t compare my sleepless nights with your pup’s late-night bathroom breaks.
- Your support for my parenting choices means the world to me—even if you don’t fully get them. Thanks for having my back during those judgmental glances!
- Your offer to help carry the diaper bag is a small gesture that speaks volumes. Thank you!
- Sometimes I miss the days of sleeping in until noon. At this point, I’d gladly settle for 9 a.m.
- Brunch has become a delightful bridge between my old life and my new one. It’s perfect for day drinking, great food, and being social with my kids around!
- I know it may seem like we have little in common now, but beneath the bags under my eyes and the occasional milk stain, the old me is still in there!
- I see some of you longing for kids but facing hurdles. I believe you’ll make an amazing parent, whenever the time comes.
- Thank you for babysitting so I can sneak in a shower or scroll through BuzzFeed for a few peaceful moments.
- I’ve discovered a newfound confidence in myself since becoming a mom. If you choose to have kids, I hope you experience this too.
- Your love for my child is heartwarming. I’m so grateful for your friendship and the way you embrace my little one.
As we navigate through life, friendships will evolve, but for those of you who have remained by my side through this parenting adventure, get ready—we’re in for an exciting ride!
