It seems that every time meal time rolls around, my little one, Max, has developed a rather infuriating habit. As soon as we sit down to enjoy dinner—whether at home, a restaurant, or a friend’s place—Max announces with impeccable timing, “Mom, I need to go to the bathroom!” Now, he may only be five years old, but I have no interest in wrestling with stained underwear, so off I go to the restroom with him. Yes, I know, I can’t unsee that visual.
Just the other night, while I was eagerly anticipating my meal, the waitress had just placed my order in front of me when Max declared his tummy hurt and insisted he couldn’t wait. So, hand in hand, we made our way to the restroom.
I can’t recall every detail of our conversation that evening, but it revolved mainly around the topic of poop—yes, that’s right, poop. I can only imagine what the line of women outside the restroom must have heard as I called out, “We’re almost done in here!” and they tapped their feet impatiently. I suspect it may have sounded a bit more entertaining than it actually was.
“Come on, buddy. I’d really love to eat my dinner while it’s still warm.”
Grunt.
Grunt.
“Are you done yet? Seriously.”
Grunt. Giggle. Grunt.
“Hurry up, my sweet. Next time, you’re tackling this solo, no matter how messy it gets.”
Grunt.
“I’m really losing my appetite here.”
Grunt. Grunt. Grunt.
“We can’t go through this again. Focus, please!”
Grunt. GRUNT.
“Finally! Let’s clean up and get back to dinner. I’m starving.”
Giggle.
For the record, it was quite the experience—definitely not the appetizing break I had hoped for.
