We really wanted to dislike Jillian Thompson—she has that flawless physique, is always vocal about fitness, and, let’s be honest, she’s downright intimidating! Yet, we can’t help but adore her, because she feels like the friend we all wish we had. She embodies that down-to-earth mom vibe: straightforward, no-nonsense, and always ready to call you out when you stray off course. Jillian, we didn’t plan on loving you, but here we are!
From shutting down online trolls to emphasizing that all kids need is love and acceptance, we’re here for Jillian’s genuine perspective on parenting. So, we decided to throw a little mom quiz her way to gauge her thoughts on some key topics—like using your kids as an excuse to bail on plans.
Finish this sentence: Motherhood is…
An exciting, crazy, exhausting, wonderful, and sometimes overwhelming journey.
What’s the grossest part of motherhood for you?
Changing a “poopy” diaper when they describe it as “creamy.” It might be a cliché, but honestly, what could be worse?
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received or given about parenting?
“Don’t stress. Kids will eventually talk, walk, and use the toilet. They’ll be just fine.”
How have your thoughts on baby weight shifted since becoming a mom?
Not at all! Weight management is a simple matter of science. My views haven’t changed. It’s challenging, but maintaining a healthy lifestyle is crucial for both you and your little one, and anyone can achieve it.
What’s your top tip for fostering a healthy body image in children?
Never put yourself down, and refrain from judging others based on their appearance.
Work/life balance is tough; any advice on juggling both?
You need to ditch the all-or-nothing mindset. Sure, kids come first because they can’t care for themselves, but it’s vital to prioritize your own happiness and health. By doing so, you set an example for your children. If you sacrifice your well-being, they’ll learn to do the same. So, carve out time for yourself—aim for at least 12 hours a week. That’s enough for workouts, date nights, self-care, and doctor visits. Many women scoff at the idea, but there are around 112 waking hours in a week; surely you can find 12 for yourself. I work hard and still make it happen, so anyone can!
Motherhood involves a lot of worry. What’s one thing you’ve realized isn’t worth the stress?
I notice many parents boasting about their kids’ achievements—talking early, walking at nine months, etc. As they grow, it’s “They received this award, they can read at four, they’ve got a black belt at nine.” It goes on and on. My kids are just normal kids, hitting milestones when they should, and I’m perfectly okay with that. I wasn’t extraordinary at any stage either, and look how I turned out! My kids will navigate life at their own pace, and I trust they’ll be just fine.
When was the last time you used your kids as an excuse to dodge something?
Just five minutes ago!
What’s the least amount of sleep you can function on?
I can manage on six hours, but honestly, I need more! I fall apart without it. Thankfully, now that my kids are older, I’m getting more rest—though still not as much as I’d like, but that’s their fault!
