Spending a day with young children can be an adventure, to say the least. When I finally take off my clothes at the end of the day, I’m often left wondering how I managed to gather so much grime. So one evening, while trying to scrub off the remnants of my day with my 4-year-old, I decided to compile a list of the substances I found clinging to me. With a little detective work and some sniff tests, here’s what I discovered:
- Snot. It’s winter, and I’m officially in a booger battle until spring.
- Pirate Booty Cheese. Seriously, this stuff is everywhere.
- Yogurt. If only my son could manage to keep more of it in his mouth than in my hair.
- Whatthehellisthat? A mystery substance that better not be poop.
- Poop. Please, for the love of all that’s holy, don’t touch your backside and then my hair while you’re on the potty!
- Food remnants. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner have all left their mark on my clothes.
- Hot tea. I managed to spill it on myself after my son barreled into my ankle with his fire truck. Yes, I burned myself; no, he didn’t care.
- Mud. Apparently, splashing around in mud is good for kids’ health—great, right?
- Paint. My son got into the paints, but luckily, we didn’t actually create any masterpieces.
- Milk. There’s always drama in our house over spilled milk.
- Earwax. Just… ew.
- Makeup. That expensive lipstick? Yeah, it’s now a casualty of our day.
- Play dough. I’ll take credit for this one; it means my kid actually engaged in something other than screen time today.
- Blood. A day in the life of preschoolers never lacks scrapes and bruises.
- Neosporin. See item 14 for context.
- Toothpaste. The struggle of brushing his teeth while sitting on him is real. Maybe I should just let him embrace cavities.
- Pee. Why do kids insist they don’t need to go? If you’d just go when you feel the urge, we wouldn’t have this wet leg situation!
- Graham cracker mush. Snacking and cuddling can lead to quite the mess.
- Germs. I can’t see or smell them, but I know they’re all over me.
