The moment you become a parent, unsolicited advice comes pouring in from every direction, often from well-meaning friends, family, and even strangers. It’s almost as if the universe decides that your life suddenly requires a commentary on every little thing.
Have you ever noticed that much of this “wisdom” is about as helpful as a chocolate teapot? You probably find that the majority of these nuggets of advice are so generic they could apply to anyone, anywhere—leaving you with little more than a vague sense of confusion (see #1). If I were to offer unsolicited advice—which I try not to—I aim to provide insights that are actually relevant to the chaotic world of parenting.
Common Parenting Phrases Reinterpreted
- It is what it is. But sometimes, you might not even know what “it” is. In such cases, I suggest washing your hands if you’ve had contact with it.
- Expect the unexpected. And by unexpected, I mean the surprise entrance. Remember that awkward moment in gym class? Just wait until your toddler swings open the bathroom stall while you’re… indisposed.
- This too shall pass. And I’m not just talking about the phases of life. Your baby will pass a lot of gas, and trust me, it will be potent.
- Life goes on. And so do the temper tantrums. Sometimes they last an entire evening—fun, right?
- Prepare for the worst. The worst version of yourself. Seriously, when was the last time you had time for a shower?
- Hope for the best. Which means hoping for a night of uninterrupted sleep—good luck with that!
- Nothing is guaranteed in life. Except for soiled diapers. Those are a given.
- What’s yours is mine. In the eyes of a two-year-old, everything belongs to them.
- It’s always something. And it’s usually something absurd that triggers the waterworks. My daughter has cried over not being able to see the moon during broad daylight, not finding her belly button while wearing a onesie, and because I wouldn’t take my glasses off—oh, the joys!
- It takes a village to raise a child. Unless, of course, you’re a polygamist, then it’s just more complicated.
