New Year’s Aspirations Every Parent Hopes Their Child Will Embrace

As we step into the new year, many of us find ourselves reflecting on personal goals, and if you’re anything like me, you might have already abandoned your resolutions. In fact, you may not have even set any! Personally, I’ve never seen much value in them, but I do wish my child would consider a few meaningful commitments. Despite my best efforts as a parent, there are certain areas where he could really benefit from some focus.

To that end, I’ve compiled a list of aspirations I would love to see my 5-year-old make this year. Naturally, I understand that the concept of resolutions is a bit whimsical when it comes to young children, but as any parent knows, sometimes you just hope for the impossible. Here’s what I envision:

  • Eat dinner
  • Choose healthier options
  • Enjoy the meal prepared by your mother after two hours of cooking
  • Consume what’s been heated and placed in front of you
  • Try these two sugar packets
  • Just eat something!
  • Finish your food faster
  • Tidy up your clothing
  • Clean your room
  • Take care of your hygiene
  • Go to bed on time
  • Actually fall asleep
  • Get more rest
  • Sleep until morning
  • Pretend to be asleep
  • Remain quiet for a few hours
  • Show kindness to others
  • Stand up for yourself
  • Avoid physical aggression
  • Use your words wisely
  • Refrain from inappropriate language
  • Communicate with us
  • Share details about your day!
  • Keep your voice down
  • Limit excessive talking
  • Don’t respond disrespectfully
  • Just stop the chatter!
  • Share with others
  • Give that back
  • Demonstrate respect
  • Practice good manners
  • Say “please”
  • Say “thank you”
  • Repeat “thank you”
  • Show some genuine gratitude for once!
  • Finally, say “you’re welcome”
  • Reduce screen time

Honestly, I’m overwhelmed with tasks. Why not just watch some television?

In summary, while New Year’s resolutions may not be practical for young children, as parents, we can dream of a few simple aspirations that would make our lives—and theirs—a little easier.
