Parenting is a journey filled with its share of surprises, and for me, one of the most unexpected has been the emergence of competition. I’ve never considered myself particularly competitive. In school, I wasn’t one to chase after A’s, nor did I care about which team was dominating the league. I’ve always embraced my individuality, content to march to the beat of my own drum. However, since stepping into the role of a parent, I’ve found myself embroiled in rivalries I never anticipated.
The DNA Showdown
Take my children’s appearance, for example. As infants, Max and Mia bore a striking resemblance to their father. Now that they’re a bit older, it’s almost uncanny—Max is a mini version of his dad, and it feels like I’m in a constant DNA showdown. I love my kids dearly, but every time someone mentions how much they look like him, I feel a pang of frustration. It’s an odd feeling, almost as if I’m losing out in some unspoken contest.
External Competition
Then there’s the external competition that creeps in. My partner, Jake, and I started our family early; we were the first among our friends to tie the knot and welcome kids. We reveled in being the trendsetters, but now it seems like everyone is catching up, and some are even outpacing us. Friends with four kids, including twins, or those juggling five kids and a couple of dogs, make me feel like I’m falling behind. I know what we have is plenty—adding a fourth child would send me spiraling into chaos—but the comparison game still stings.
Seeking Common Ground
Interestingly, Jake remains unfazed by these thoughts. He thinks I’m being silly for feeling this way. So, I turn to you, fellow moms: Is this struggle to measure up a common experience? Am I alone in feeling this unwelcomed rivalry, or is it a shared sentiment?
A Different Perspective
Perhaps I should pick a sports team to root for instead of obsessing over family size. That would certainly be less stressful than contemplating another baby.
