Engaging In-Room Activities for Family Vacations

After a delightful day at the beach, the evening may bring unexpected rain or simply a fatigue that makes further sightseeing unappealing. However, your vacation can still be enjoyable with the right indoor activities. One of my favorite ways to unwind during travel is to engage in card games back at the hotel. They are ideal for family trips because 1) they allow you to rest those tired feet; 2) you won’t have to worry about misplacing game pieces, which often leads to frustration once you return home; and 3) they inspire a light-hearted competitive spirit among players! On your next getaway, consider packing these games to tackle the common questions of “What should we do now?” and “I’m bored!” Plus, they occupy minimal space in your luggage, leaving more room for those cherished souvenirs!

Five Crowns

This is my all-time favorite card game. The objective is to achieve the lowest score over 11 rounds. Players start with three cards and can “go out” when they form three of a kind or three consecutive cards of the same suit. In the first round, threes act as wild cards; in the next, fours are wild, and this pattern continues until the final round with kings. After someone goes out, players must add up the values of any ungrouped cards in their hands. Just a heads up: a seemingly winning hand can quickly plummet to last place with one high-scoring round!

Scrabble Slam

I appreciate the rapid pace of this game. Begin by placing the letters of any four-letter word on the table. Players then take turns slamming down cards to create new words, like changing “wine” to “fine.” The first player to use all their cards emerges victorious. It’s simple, quick, and incredibly entertaining!

Rat-a-Tat Cat

In this game, each player lays out four cards face down and peeks at two. The aim is to end with the lowest score. High cards depict rats, whereas low cards showcase cats. On your turn, draw a card and choose to swap it with one of your cards or discard it. Some cards allow you to peek at your remaining cards or swap with your opponents. When you believe you have the lowest possible score, shout “Rat-a-Tat Cat!” Each player then tallies their cards. The blend of luck, strategy, and laughter makes this game a hit!

Uno

A classic that never gets old! Suitable for kids of all ages, players match colors or numbers, while avoiding the dreaded cards that force you to draw two or skip your turn. The first to empty their hand wins, but remember to shout “Uno!” when you’re down to one card!

Regular Deck of Cards

With a standard deck, the possibilities are endless! Play Go Fish, rummy, crazy eights, war, or even that classic—52-pickup!

While it’s important that kids aren’t entertained every second of your trip, having these games handy can provide great comfort. Family vacations can be costly. However, managing stress, especially during leisure time, is invaluable.
