Ladies, It’s Time to Demand What We Deserve

Hey there, fierce women of the world. Let’s have an honest conversation about something crucial: valuing ourselves, earning what we’re worth, and standing firm in our rights. This might stir up some discomfort and stress, but if there’s one thing we know, it’s that women are tough and ready to tackle tough topics.

Let’s start by addressing a glaring issue: the persistent pay gap between men and women. It’s 2023, and yet, women still earn significantly less than their male counterparts for identical work. According to recent data from the Institute for Women’s Policy Research, women make up nearly half of the workforce and are the primary earners in about half of all households. We’re educated, too—many of us hold more degrees than men. Yet, despite these accomplishments, we earn only about 80 cents for every dollar a man makes. This disparity persists across all job sectors, regardless of whether they’re male-dominated, female-dominated, or balanced.

Feeling frustrated? You should be. The slow march toward pay equality is disheartening. At the current rate, it could take another 44 years for women’s pay to finally match men’s. And for women of color, the situation is even bleaker; estimates suggest that Black women may have to wait 108 years, and Hispanic women an astonishing 233 years for pay equity.

Take a moment to let that sink in. Let your frustration fuel your determination. The system may be flawed, and while some politicians may be out of touch, we still possess power. We may have been conditioned to suppress our voices, but we must reclaim that power.

Women, you are an incredible force. You juggle multiple responsibilities, yet many of you hesitate to speak up for what you deserve. When offered a job, how often do you negotiate your salary? Or when it’s time for a raise, do you find yourself second-guessing? Society has conditioned us to fear being perceived as aggressive or demanding. But guess what? Men don’t have that problem. They confidently assert their worth, believing their skills and experience merit higher compensation, and they aren’t shy about asking for more.

This is not a condemnation of men; it’s about recognizing a societal imbalance. Men are taught to advocate for themselves, while many women still struggle with self-advocacy. This isn’t just a personal issue; it’s a cultural one.

As someone who has worked in academia and published across various platforms, I’ve faced my own challenges in asserting my worth. I constantly ask myself, “Would a man with my credentials negotiate for higher pay?” The answer is usually yes. If men believe they deserve more, they simply ask. If they don’t get what they want, they either negotiate further or move on. They know the power of their voice.

I understand this is a generalization. Not all men are comfortable advocating for themselves, just as many women do push for what they deserve every day. But research shows that many women still wrestle with this issue, and it’s rooted in our culture and outdated views of gender roles.

So, the next time you find yourself needing to negotiate for a better salary or a raise, channel your inner strength. Stand tall and own your worth. Don’t overthink it—just take the leap. We must speak up, ladies. Demand what you deserve. Let’s dismantle the patriarchal norms that hold us back and work towards a better future for ourselves and the generations to come.
