As a mother of a Latino child, I was deeply unsettled when another child at school casually mentioned that if a certain individual were to become president, my son would be sent back to Guatemala. This wasn’t meant to be cruel; it was just a statement of perceived fact. Perhaps that makes it even more troubling. I worry for my son, who will soon transition from a child to a Latino man, and who, more often than not, is one of the few children of color in his surroundings.
I also carry the weight of my family’s history. My father, a staunch supporter of HRC, passed away this summer, just before he could cast his vote. My mother, who ran for local office when I was an infant and juggled a full-time job out of passion, instilled in me the belief that I could achieve anything I set my mind to.
My husband, who devoted six months to staying home with our son while I worked to support our family, has made it a point to attend every birthday party, school function, and sports event over the past decade. He also takes on the nightly cooking responsibilities for our family.
As a woman, I have faced my share of adversity. My first experience of unwanted physical contact happened at a party, where I was pushed to the ground, held down, and forced to endure a kiss that I had to pretend to enjoy just to escape. In college, I was harassed for advocating for mandatory rape education after a devastating incident affected someone in my dorm.
Today, I cast my vote. I did it for my father, my mother, my husband, my son and his future, the young woman in my dorm, for the planet, and for each and every one of us. In summary, the journey of motherhood, advocacy, and personal growth is profound. We must stand together in solidarity for our children and their futures.
