When a baby is admitted to the NICU, it can be a truly frightening experience for families. However, thanks to the kindness and ingenuity of the March of Dimes and the dedicated staff at St. Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City, Halloween became a bit brighter for these little ones and their families.

Halloween is a time of excitement and joy, and even the tiniest babies deserve to partake in the festivities. This year, the March of Dimes, in collaboration with St. Luke’s Hospital, crafted handmade Halloween costumes for infants in the NICU. Each baby received a whimsical “Trick or Treat, smell my feet” card featuring their tiny footprints, a hand-crocheted pumpkin filled with treats, and a delightful Halloween storybook for families to enjoy together.

Jennifer Lee, the Communications Director for March of Dimes, shared with us, “Families often spend extended periods in the NICU, which can be emotionally draining. By offering a chance to celebrate Halloween with their little ones, we help them find a sense of normalcy and create memories around their baby’s first milestones.”

While the babies may not have had the final say in their costumes, their outfits were nothing short of adorable. From superhero capes to butterfly wings, the creativity shone through. Some little ones donned Captain America shields, while others sported jerseys from their local team, the Kansas City Royals. Every piece was crafted with love and care for these precious patients.

Having spent two days in the NICU with my own baby, I can attest to the challenges families face during such a time. The compassion from organizations like March of Dimes and the hard work of the nurses at St. Luke’s provide much-needed support. These Halloween celebrations allow families to experience a bit of joy amidst the stress, reminding them that there’s still room for fun and laughter, even in difficult times.

So, while these babies may have looked like superheroes, the real heroes are the volunteers and healthcare workers who bring light into their lives.
