Dear Conscious Friends, Let’s Get Zika Right

There’s a time and a place for holistic approaches. Use coconut oil for your skin issues, essential oils to soothe your baby to sleep, and enjoy some sauerkraut and Kombucha to boost your gut health. But now, we’re dealing with something serious.

Friends, let’s not take this Zika virus lightly.

Just yesterday, health officials in Florida announced that Zika was detected in mosquito samples from Miami Beach. These are the first confirmed cases of Zika-carrying mosquitoes in the continental United States.

In my state alone, there have been 46 travel-related Zika cases, and given our warm, humid environment, it’s only a matter of time before Zika becomes more prevalent, just as it has in Florida and Puerto Rico, where around 1 in 4 individuals, including pregnant women, are expected to contract the virus. While Zika often has mild symptoms and no definitive treatment, it poses a significant risk, particularly for pregnant women, as it can lead to serious birth defects like microcephaly. There are also concerns about related eye defects, hearing loss, and growth issues.

Dr. Nathan Rivers, a controversial figure in alternative medicine, has already published articles claiming that the establishment of Zika in the U.S. is nearly impossible (it certainly is not) and has labeled the CDC’s efforts as nothing more than a “propaganda initiative.” This is concerning, as some individuals in the holistic community may view Dr. Rivers as a credible source of information, and his misleading articles have been shared over 36,000 times. This means those individuals may be underestimating the threat of Zika, believing it’s only an issue abroad, or simply that it’s overhyped. We can only hope they’re not living near any mosquito-infested areas.

The only effective way to manage Zika is by controlling mosquito populations. The CDC has a comprehensive protocol for addressing Zika cases, which includes eliminating standing water and fogging with pesticides. While many in the holistic community agree that removing standing water can help reduce mosquito-borne illnesses, if you don’t see Zika as a threat, why take action?

Sure, some people might recognize the danger of Zika. Unfortunately, these are often the same individuals who’ve been sold on the idea that essential oils can solve every problem, from sleeplessness to serious illnesses. They might think these oils can also ward off mosquitoes. There are endless recipes for natural mosquito repellents circulating out there, some featuring essential oils.

Herein lies the issue: as anyone who’s tried these natural remedies knows, they often fall short. You need DEET, folks. Yes, that powerful, effective insect repellent. That’s why health professionals and aid workers rely on it instead of “natural” alternatives. It’s not a corporate conspiracy; it’s simply about avoiding mosquito bites.

I can already envision other nightmare scenarios unfolding. Remember, there’s no effective treatment for Zika. Please don’t concoct remedies involving essential oils, garlic, or apple cider vinegar. Pregnant women already face enough challenges without adding these ineffective solutions to their worries. And while it’s true that mainstream medicine isn’t infallible, do you really believe that your lemon-infused concoction will save anyone?

Let’s be clear: do not suggest that a Paleo diet or coconut oil will protect against Zika, or that hiding indoors for nine months will keep the mosquitoes at bay. I recently swatted one in my own bathroom, so that’s a myth.

When an inevitable vaccine becomes available, let’s refrain from spreading fear about its safety concerning monkey DNA or mercury. Don’t engage in fear-mongering on social media. Instead, roll up your sleeve, get vaccinated, and appreciate the advancements in medical science that could protect you and your baby.

So, what I’m really saying is this: trust the experts (the CDC, not Dr. Rivers). Stick to the facts (Zika is a real threat, especially for fetuses; there’s no current treatment). Eliminate mosquitoes with appropriate measures, not wishful thinking. You’re combating disease-carrying insects, not sending them to a mythical paradise. For the love of all things good, put down the oils and pick up DEET, please.
