In just a few weeks, I’ll be celebrating my 41st birthday. That’s right—I’ll officially be in my 40s. Back when I turned 20, I thought 40 was ancient, a milestone marking the end of my youth. Now, looking back, I realize that my 20-year-old self would roll her eyes at many of my current thoughts. But honestly? I don’t care; it’s called growth.
Forty is certainly not the new 20; it’s a far more enriching experience. In our younger years, we often hesitate to voice what we really want—whether it’s in our careers, relationships, or even our weekend plans. We might think we were assertive back then, but wait until you reach your 40s; your voice grows louder, and trust me, louder is better. By this stage, many women have mastered the art of prioritizing their own happiness without concern for others’ judgment. The misconceptions I held about being in my 40s when I was 20? They deserve nothing but a wave goodbye.
My Body Will Be Different
Yes, it will be different—but that’s okay. By the time you hit 40, whether or not you’ve had children, your body won’t resemble what it did two decades ago. It’s time to accept that. Our bodies are merely vessels for our souls. As we mature, we learn that true beauty comes from how we make others feel, not from our physical appearance. What really matters is the kindness we share, not the cellulite or stretch marks that once consumed my thoughts back when I was 20.
Life Will Be Boring
What once seemed like a dull existence is now a luxury. You have the freedom to choose whether to unwind with a glass of wine and text your friends, enjoy a family movie, or embark on a late-night run with your crew. The beauty of aging is that you’ve experienced life; you know what truly brings you joy and what can simply be left behind. Whether it’s dancing to your favorite tunes in a sleek leather skirt or simply enjoying a quiet evening at home, your confidence skyrockets with age. We can still embrace our playful sides without neglecting our responsibilities.
Opportunities Will Dwindle
On the contrary, opportunities abound. With age comes wisdom, and you become adept at recognizing what sparks joy. You’re no longer afraid to let go of jobs, relationships, or even those skinny jeans that haven’t fit since 2009. As you grow older, it becomes easier to discern the negativity that certain people or situations bring into your life. You appreciate your time far too much to waste it hanging on to what no longer serves you. Saying goodbye becomes a liberating act.
Turning 40 Means Being Old
Not at all—instead, it means being “wise and youthful.” Sure, you might notice a few wrinkles and strands of gray, but guess what? It’s a privilege to age gracefully. Wear those signs with pride; they represent the richness of your experiences.
I genuinely like myself so much more now than I did over 20 years ago, and much of that is due to my newfound ability to not sweat how long I’ve been on this earth. Living for over 40 years has blessed me with valuable lessons, a loving family, and a sense of self that I lacked in my younger years. Bring on 60; I’ve heard it only gets better from here.
