I Am More Than Just My Children’s Mother

At some point in our lives, we all experience that eye-opening moment when we realize our parents are not just authority figures but individuals with their own lives and stories. Perhaps it was when you overheard them discussing their youthful escapades, or during a family gathering where your carefree mother surprised everyone with her unexpected antics. These instances reveal that the parents we often view as embarrassing are, in fact, human beings with their own experiences and personalities.

This realization leads me to ponder the day my children might look at me with a mix of affection and embarrassment, as their unconditional love transitions into a desire for distance. Right now, they adore me, seeing me as the center of their universe, which is both heartwarming and exhausting. Yet, I know that the day will come when they may request I drop them off a few blocks away to avoid being seen with me. I can only hope that, after navigating the tumultuous teenage years, they’ll recognize me as a person again and seek my company.

To help them understand that I am more than just their mom, I’ve decided to share a few reminders:

Dear kids:

  • Just like I learned about my own parents, you were not delivered by a stork. Do the math.
  • Even though I may be older, I can still tear up the dance floor. While I can’t predict what I’ll be dancing to in my golden years, I will always have a soft spot for classics like “Baby Got Back.”
  • My concerns about you going to college partly stem from my own questionable decisions, like the time I consumed an entire bottle of Hawkeye Vodka with a friend while attempting to write our Philosophy midterms. Spoiler: we did not excel.
  • Santa Claus, the Tooth Fairy, and the Easter Bunny have the same handwriting because… well, you can figure that out.
  • I’m not actually “allergic” to cats, and the radio didn’t stop playing Justin Bieber songs because of his legal issues. At times, I may embellish the truth, and it’s okay in certain situations, right?
  • I, too, hid things from my parents, and frequently, they figured it out.
  • Yes, I have celebrity crushes, but if you ever read my blog, maybe you’ll discover who they are.
  • Tasks like laundry, garbage disposal, scrubbing toilets, and algebra? I find them just as tedious as you do.

Love, your mom.
