Summer is just around the corner, and after enduring yet another harsh winter, the allure of sunny days and outdoor fun beckons us. With flowers blooming and sandals making their long-awaited return, it’s time to embrace the season. Kids are buzzing with anticipation, and parents are juggling the chaos of summer plans. But let’s face it—summer can be overwhelming, especially for those of us trying to keep our families entertained and happy.
While everyone else seems to be posting about their perfect vacations and meticulously planned summer activities, I’m here to declare that it’s time to take back my summer. I want genuine relaxation and real enjoyment, and I’m ready to ditch the unnecessary pressure. Here are four things I refuse to do this summer:
- I won’t restrict screen time—for myself.
There’s been plenty of chatter about the need to disconnect, and while I get it, I have a job that demands my attention online. Whether I’m at the beach, the park, or just lounging by the pool, my work keeps me connected. So go ahead, give me those judgmental looks when you see me replying to emails while my kids play. I’m doing what I need to do to support our family—so, yes, I might be scrolling through social media too.
- I won’t abandon my fitness routine.
When school is in session, I’m a workout warrior. I enjoy running with my friends and hitting spin classes, so why should that change in summer? This year, my children will happily wait poolside while I swim laps or ride their bikes alongside me as I jog off last night’s dessert. It’s vital they see me prioritizing my health, and if it means a few extra minutes of waiting, so be it.
- I won’t schedule every moment.
In the past, I’ve meticulously planned our summer down to the last detail, only to end up stressed before the fun even starts. This year, I’m embracing the beauty of downtime. Afternoons will be spent lounging with a good book instead of rushing from one activity to another. I’m letting my kids experience a little boredom and learn to entertain themselves—it’s a valuable skill!
- I won’t splurge on summer camps.
Every spring, I dive into the search for enriching camps, but let’s be honest—most of the time, it only leads to early mornings and endless driving. The reality is, my kids cherish the simple moments, like skipping rocks at the local creek, far more than any expensive camp experience. This summer, we’ll focus on those small joys instead of draining our wallets.
Some may view my list as selfish, but for me, it’s about survival. My kids deserve a mother who can relax and enjoy this special time without the stress of school obligations and packed schedules. If anyone judges me for prioritizing my well-being so that I can be the best version of myself for them, they can miss out on my summer margaritas and cozy evenings on the patio.

In summary, this summer is all about reclaiming my time and focus, choosing relaxation over stress, and cherishing the simple joys of life with my kids.
