Dear Target: A Letter from a Queer Mom

Dear Target,

Like many moms out there, I have a deep appreciation for you. But my admiration goes beyond the usual reasons.

As a company, you continue to prioritize creating an inclusive environment for both your customers and your employees. On April 19, you boldly reaffirmed your policy allowing transgender individuals to use the restrooms and fitting rooms that align with their gender identity, making you the first major retailer to take such a public stand.

In recent times, your name has dominated the headlines, often associated with what some might describe as a public relations crisis. There have been protests, boycotts, and even people standing outside your stores with signs. Yet, as a queer mom, I choose to stand by you.

Thank you for remaining steadfast in the face of adversity. Your commitment to ensuring a safe shopping experience for everyone, including your employees, is commendable.

The Injustices Faced by Transgender Individuals

The injustices faced by transgender individuals are staggering. A recent survey revealed some distressing statistics:

  • 90% of transgender individuals reported experiencing harassment, mistreatment, or discrimination in the workplace.
  • 29% have faced harassment from law enforcement.
  • 57% have been rejected by their families.
  • Transgender individuals are twice as likely to be unemployed, with trans people of color facing even higher rates.
  • Many live on less than $10,000 a year.

In 2016 alone, we tragically lost eight transgender individuals to murder, three of whom were right here in Texas (Austin, San Antonio, and Houston). Data indicates that in areas where battles over bathroom access are occurring, calls to national and local LGBT and trans-specific suicide hotlines increase.

Over the years, you have consistently demonstrated your commitment to diversity, inclusion, and safety. You clearly state, “Everyone deserves to feel like they belong. And you’ll always be accepted, respected, and welcomed at Target.”

I want to thank you for making designer labels accessible to those of us living on a middle-class income. I appreciate being able to grab my much-needed coffee from Starbucks while shopping. You’ve become my go-to destination for everything from birthday gifts to household essentials. Your stores are clean, organized, and staffed with friendly employees.

But above all, thank you for being a trailblazer in advocating for social justice. Your actions make this queer mom feel safe and valued.
