A Heartfelt Thank You to Our Dedicated Educators

Reflecting on my first role after graduate school as a library media specialist at an elementary school, I am reminded of the profound impact educators have on our society. Over two decades ago, my colleagues and I faced the challenges of being underpaid and often overlooked in public schools. Yet, I quickly discovered that teaching is driven by passion, not profit. It is a calling that extends far beyond mere financial compensation.

Unfortunately, the reality remains that many teachers are still grossly underappreciated, grappling with a mountain of bureaucracy, shifting educational theories, and ever-evolving standards. I can’t think of any other profession that endures such relentless demands yet continues to show up year after year.

Why do they do it? Because teaching is more than just a job; it’s a vocation. Educators possess an unwavering commitment to shaping our children into responsible adults. Think for a moment: if I asked you to name one influential adult from your childhood, chances are you’d mention a teacher. Personally, I can easily recall several, particularly my middle school librarian, Mrs. Jacobs, who allowed me to come in early and help organize the library. Her encouragement was pivotal in inspiring my career path.

To all the devoted teachers out there: Thank you.

  • Thank you for stepping in as the supportive figures for children who lack guidance at home.
  • Thank you for uplifting those who only hear negativity from their families.
  • Thank you for using your own resources so students can engage in hands-on learning activities, especially when they have few resources outside of school.
  • Thank you for caring deeply about the child who challenges your patience, often without anyone else to advocate for them.
  • Thank you for reading aloud to students who may never hear a story told at home.
  • Thank you for showing affection to those who often shy away from physical touch due to a lack of warmth in their lives.
  • Thank you for greeting each child with enthusiasm every morning, particularly when they might be coming from a difficult home environment.
  • Thank you for instilling hope by telling kids they can achieve their dreams, even when they hear discouraging words at home.
  • Thank you for working late into the night grading papers, creating bulletin boards, and navigating planning days that leave little room for actual planning.

Thank you for your ability to hold it together, even when you can only take a bathroom break once a day and scarf down lunch in mere minutes.

Most importantly, thank you for your relentless dedication to an occupation where your successes often go unseen. Thank you for teaching the same lessons year after year, all the while pondering, “Will anyone remember this? What’s the point?”

I want to assure you that I remember, my children will remember, and someday, one of your former students will look back fondly on how you enriched their lives. They will go into the world, reading (thanks to you), calculating (thanks to you), and thinking critically—all because of your guidance.

And special thanks to Ms. Harris, my seventh-grade English teacher. I once thought you were quite strict because of all the time we spent on sentence diagramming, but now I recognize that you equipped me with a valuable skill for expressing myself. Wherever you are, I’m going to diagram this sentence just for you.
