As a new mother, I often feel overwhelmed by judgment—from seasoned parents, relatives, friends, and even those strangers in grocery store aisles who seem to judge my every move with a cold stare and unsolicited recommendations. It appears that motherhood comes with an unending wave of scrutiny. I get it, and it’s exhausting.
But here’s the thing: while it’s true that we sometimes face judgment, we must also recognize that the unsolicited advice we receive may occasionally stem from a genuine place of concern. Even those who claim, “I’m not a child person,” can’t help but feel empathy when witnessing a child in distress. It’s human nature to care, right? Have you ever seen a little one stray too close to a busy road and felt your heart race? Congratulations, you’re human.
After a recent visit to urgent care with my adventurous 9-month-old son, I realized that much of this perceived judgment is often self-inflicted. He had a minor cut on his gum from a tumble in the bathroom, but luckily, it was nothing serious. The experience left me rattled, though, and when the doctor asked if I was present when he fell, I felt a surge of defensiveness. My instinct was to respond with frustration, “Of course I was there! Do you think I’m negligent?”
When she sweetly suggested we discuss safety measures to prevent future accidents, I found myself forcing a smile as she elaborated on childproofing and the importance of supervision. After this slightly uncomfortable conversation, why didn’t I erupt? Surely this doctor must have been judging me, right? She must have thought I was an irresponsible parent who left dangerous items lying around!
We’ve all entertained similar resentful thoughts after receiving comments from well-meaning doctors, friends, or that nosy woman in line behind you at the store when your child is throwing a fit. But instead of succumbing to indignation, I chose to remind myself that her intentions were rooted in concern. I don’t know the stories of other children she’s treated, nor do I know if she’s witnessed neglect or abuse. What I do know is that she was doing her job with sincerity and care for my child’s well-being.
Perspective is everything. You can perceive these comments as personal attacks on your parenting skills, or you can view them as expressions of genuine interest in your child’s safety. I’m making a concerted effort to embrace the latter viewpoint because it restores my faith in humanity. We could all use a little more of that these days.
So, the next time you encounter that inquisitive lady behind you at the checkout who says, “I wouldn’t have taken them out at that age,” take a deep breath, smile, and appreciate her concern. After all, nobody is truly judging you. You have enough on your plate; let this be one less worry.
