Navigating the Mixed Emotions of Breastfeeding

To my dear, milk-loving little one,

Let’s be real: breastfeeding can be a rollercoaster of feelings. I find myself dreading those midnight wake-ups when I’ve barely closed my eyes before you demand to nurse. The 2 a.m. feedings? They’re not much better, especially when I glance over to see your dad blissfully asleep, while I’m wide awake. And then there are those 4 a.m. moments when you’re sleepy and lazy with your latch, making it painful for me. By the time 6 a.m. rolls around, I’m glancing at the clock, knowing I should be getting up soon, even though I haven’t had enough sleep.

Oh, and let’s not forget the chaos of 8:30 a.m. when I’m running late dropping off your sister at school, juggling a mismatched lunch, uncombed hair, and no socks for her, all because I was just trying to squeeze in a few extra precious minutes of sleep while you nursed.

Then there are those frustrating moments when I encounter judgment online from strangers who think I’m doing something shameful by feeding you. Or the times I’m nursing you in public and I see other parents hastily ushering their kids away, as if what we’re doing is scandalous.

But despite all that, there are so many reasons I cherish breastfeeding. It’s so convenient, it’s practically free, the health benefits are undeniable, and it brings you such joy. And for those who might disapprove of me nursing in public, I take comfort in knowing that my right to do so is protected by law. Honestly, if someone approached my sleep-deprived, frazzled self to ask me to move, things wouldn’t end well.

With all my love,
