To My Son: Cherish Your Unique Sparkle, Kid

As you step out into the world, my one wish for you is simple: Never lose your love for the color purple. When someone asks your favorite color, I want you to shout, “Purple is my favorite!” just as confidently as you do now. As you grow and explore beyond our family—into preschool, sports, and new friendships—some people may try to convince you that certain things you love should be off-limits.

I’ve already seen the seeds of this misunderstanding. A few weeks ago at a children’s clothing store, you were excitedly holding up a pair of lavender skinny jeans, twirling around with joy. Meanwhile, the saleswoman behind the counter let out a sigh and rolled her eyes, a reaction you missed but one that stung me deeply. Those jeans were on a rack designated for girls, but you saw only your favorite color and knew those were the ones that spoke to you. Unfortunately, this won’t be the last time you encounter such skepticism regarding your preferences.

I’ve witnessed other boys who once embraced colors like purple or pink, only to abandon them for more “acceptable” hues like orange or blue once they entered daycare or preschool. But that’s not you. I hope you remain steadfast in who you are and the things you cherish.

My greatest hope is that instead of conforming to someone else’s expectations, you become a beacon for others, showing that a boy can adore both purple and trucks, enjoy kisses and elbow fights, appreciate sparkles and dinosaurs, or wear headbands and cargo shorts. These aren’t opposing concepts; they simply add up to the wonderful person that you are. You, the little boy I adore, with the sandy face and nail polish chipped from sandbox adventures, are perfect in your fearless authenticity.

Part of your carefree spirit comes from the fact that, so far, no one has imposed rigid definitions of what it means to be a boy. Your father and I have intentionally avoided forcing any stereotypes upon you because we believe that it doesn’t matter whether a child prefers trucks or ponies. What truly matters is that you learn to accept and love yourself, standing proudly by who you are.

Currently, you are just being yourself, unhindered by societal expectations or peer pressure. However, I know that as you grow older, this blissful ignorance will fade. I want to hold you close and tell you that your joyful skipping doesn’t have to transform into a macho swagger. I want you to understand that what may make you feel different can ultimately become your strongest attributes.

So, as you venture into the world, remember my wish for you: Hold on to your sparkle, kid.
