On one such occasion near the elementary school, my neighbor slowed down to scrutinize the “suspicious person” who turned out to be me, bundled in my husband’s oversized flannel pants, a sweatshirt tucked in (a genius slob trick for keeping them up).
When I step into a store dressed like this, it often guarantees an onslaught of overly attentive customer service. Sales associates and even security guards shadow me, asking every few moments if they can assist. I sometimes wish I could respond, “Can you help me sneak this outfit into my pockets?” (I’ve mastered the art of using pockets and even my bra as makeshift purses, but that’s a story for another day.) Yet, I usually keep quiet and accept that looking disheveled comes with the territory.
Silver Linings of Slobby Living
There are, however, silver linings to this slobby lifestyle. My kids have learned to take the bus instead of asking for rides to school, avoiding the embarrassment of being seen with my mismatched getups. One of my favorite weekday looks is a nightgown layered over pajama pants, topped with a velour robe. And when I choose a hair wrap instead of a hat, my hair achieves a whole new level of “fierce” (which translates to looking absolutely terrible).
My choice of garments means I’m always ready for a nap and, most importantly, I’m comfortable. On days when I want to feel a bit more put-together, I can easily switch to leggings or well-fitting sweatpants and trade my fleece hat for a stylish scarf, allowing me to look presentable without sacrificing comfort.

Take today, for instance—I’m rocking leggings, snow boots, a sports bra, and an oversized “dress” (okay, let’s call it a sweatshirt I snagged from the women’s section at Target; it’s definitely not my husband’s). I added a touch of lip gloss and mascara, transforming my look into something “fancy” and presentable at the local café. As someone who leans towards casual wear, it doesn’t take much to feel that way.
