Dear Alex,
Can you believe our little one is nearly a year old? It feels surreal as we reminisce about how swiftly this past year has flown by.
I still remember the day I called you, my voice trembling with excitement and nerves, letting you know that I had just left the doctor’s office and was on my way to the hospital because our baby was finally arriving. When you rushed to meet me at the hospital, still in your scrubs after cutting your shift short, your presence instantly calmed my racing heart.
Reflecting on that rainy spring morning when our son made his grand entrance into the world, it’s astonishing to think that four seasons have come and gone since then. In that short time, I have watched you embrace your role as a father wholeheartedly.
I’ll never forget the first time I saw you change a diaper without hesitation or the way you sprang into action when our son’s cries pierced the stillness of our hospital room. When we were told he would remain in the hospital longer due to jaundice and weight loss, I leaned on you as panic washed over me. While I shed tears of worry as a new mother faced with unexpected challenges, you stood strong, my rock.
Navigating the struggles of breastfeeding, you listened to the lactation consultants alongside me, and we stumbled through those early attempts together. As I pumped every hour to increase my supply, you offered unwavering support, visiting our son in the nursery under the harsh lights of his incubator. When I felt overwhelmed by his fragility, you held my hand and shared sweet jokes that reminded me that this, too, would pass.
And pass it did. Those initial weeks at home were filled with sleepless nights, constant feedings, and the exhaustion that comes with new parenthood. Yet, you were right there with me, embarking on your own journey as a father. While I was still grappling with this new reality, you found joy in every moment, providing the glue that kept our family together. Your boundless strength somehow extended to all of us.
Witnessing your transition into fatherhood has illuminated all the qualities I adore about you in fresh light. As our tiny baby transformed into a little boy with his own unique personality, I’ve delighted in seeing pieces of you shine through him. From his curly hair and expressive eyes to his adventurous spirit, it’s heartwarming to know he carries your best traits.
Your approach to fatherhood has been like watching a hidden talent unfold. You seamlessly embraced your new role, creating sweet traditions and playful moments. You turned bath time into a cozy adventure, complete with warm lights and soothing classical music. While I was navigating my fears, you were crafting our days into joyful experiences.
You understood that a mother’s love often comes with guilt, and during those moments when I stumbled, you showered me with kindness. You surprised me with thoughtful gifts and reminded me that everything would be alright.
Of course, there were tough moments, too. Friends warned me that the arrival of a first baby could strain a marriage, but in those early days, I couldn’t imagine feeling upset with you. Yet, as the nights dragged on and tempers flared, especially when you returned to work while I focused solely on care for our new arrival, tension occasionally flared.
But even through those challenges, we grew stronger together. When I returned to work after my maternity leave, you were there to wipe my tears, assuring me that our bond with our son would remain unbreakable. You helped me learn to accept assistance and let go of the need to control every situation.
Thanks to you, I have been able to prioritize self-care without guilt. Over this past year, our son has thrived, and so have I, with your support.
So, dear Alex, I may not fully comprehend how nearly a year has slipped by since you first became a father, but I am grateful to have shared this incredible journey with you.
